is it worth bringing the flat tire changing stuff to a half ironman? how much will that bag on the saddle slow me down? is it extremly bad for aero to have that thing on in a race?

you want to be able to change a tire without waiting for race support. you may lose more time with a flat than you'd ever lose to the drag created by the bag.

for oly, i carry a fresh tube, (2) C02 cartridges, inflator head thingy for the CO2, tire irons, and a box peel and stick patches. this all fits in a little underseat bag.

if i have trouble, first flat gets the fresh tube, second flat gets a sticker assuming the second CO2 didn't get used already, then i'm waiting for the sag truck....

i did get a pinch flat in my last race and changed my tire and still PR'ed for that race

I'm not a big fan of walking in my bike shoes, so I bring a kit for any distance. Sprint & Oly = 1 tube, CO2, CO2 inflator, 1 tire lever, and a tiny patch kit. I fit all of this into a very small bag. I carry more in a HIM and IM. (2 tubes, 2 CO2 cartridges, a combo mini pump/CO2 inflator, and 2 allen wrenches in case anything comes loose).

I'll always carry 2 tubes, micro inflate, and 3 CO2 plus levers and tools. I don't bring a patch kit. For an IM I will have another tube in the special needs bag.

I did an Oly a couple of weeks ago with a friend, who decided it was too short of a race to worry about carrying a bag. He flatted at mile 12, and it took 30 minutes for the support van to get to him. It's not worth potentially ruining your day to save the small amount of weight.

I do carry stuff (in as small a seat bag as I can) for all distances. Mike, who is much faster than I am, doesn't carry things for sprints and I don't think for olys either -- if he has a flat, it puts his day off enough that it no longer really matters (he is really fast). So to him the weight isn't worth it, to me knowing it is there and being able to finish even if slower makes it worth it.
