How many "accidents" have you had???
i wrecked my motorcycle today if that counts for anything
"Age doesn't bring wisdom; miles do."
6 years of bmx trail riding, not really any accidents to speak of, got almost 2000k on my road bike and no accidents yet except a classic can't-unclip-oh-**** fall onto grass beside my front door.
Knock on wood.
Been road, town, mountain, and tri biking, bike commuting, and bike touring for 22 years and this is it:
- Hit by a dog once (ran out at me, knocked me over, turned out to be friendly dog, thankfully!) - shoulder muscle injury
- Run off road by big truck that got too close - chose ditch over going under truck wheels, minor scrapes and bruises
- Pump came loose, jammed between spokes and derailleur, did an endo (this was in a triathlon). Scrapes and bruises
- Stung repeatedly by yellowjacket that flew down front of jersey (yeeeouch!). Ran off road into ditch.
So I guess I've averaged one accident every 5 years or so. I average 1,000 - 3,000 miles a year on my bikes.

In thirty years...hit by a car once, gone down in several spectacular pack crashes...and crashed alone on a flat road for no reason...
7 seems a bit much, but I'm the soul of caution....
Do you listen to music while you run? Just curious...I have a theory.

That's pretty much the exact same crash record as me, except that I did it all in about 2 years. And there was a plenty good reason for crashing by myself.....I wasn't looking where I was going :D.

Not fast enough.
I was pulling up to an intersection this spring and was too lazy to unclip, so I coasted up to a "No Parking Here to Corner" sign and was going to just hold on to the sign post while waitin for the light. Unfortunatel the car in front of me stopped and was to far to the right for me to reach the curb and I was going really slow and couldn't get unclipped and just fell over into the grass behind the curb. I must have looked really cool doing that!

had my fair share of can't unclip accidents. it happened in a race and no one around knew what to do. it was one of those "should we help? ...but its too funny we have to turn around and laugh" moments...you gotta love it!

No I usually don't listen to music....but I often run with a friend. I live in a city where there are bike paths, and for some reason the city, in their wisdom, puts up street signs in the middle of these paths (at least I seem to have found them all) or they have signs bolted to the pavement on narrow sidewalks: a path wide enough for 2 people to walk or run side-by-side suddenly becomes passable by one person - if you are engrossed in a conversation, watch out! especially if it's twilight, dawn, or overcast. They can come out of nowhere!
This applies to motorcycles but don't not too sure about bicycles but its only a wreck if the handlebar touches the ground:)
Wrinkle the pavement!
-my fair share of unclip accidents
-3x taking a corner crazy fast and sliding out twice in bike races while riding my myself trying to catch the pack that just dropped me and once while practicing cornering (skidding hurts! and I broke my derailleur off once)
-pack crash because of poor communication about a big cinder block in the bike lane
-endo trying to get up a curb (in front of my whole team)
-rode right into a parked car
-rode right into a car that pulled out in front of me
-stung by a bee that flew down my jersey (didn't crash, but I did flash the whole road trying to get it out)
This is in 5 years, but all except for the bee were more than 2 years ago.

Carolyn, we better never ride together! You sound like you could be my twin!!http://www.trifuel.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif
none really, unless you count falling over because you didnt unclip on time--have done that 2x. ironically, have also dropped one of my motorcycles in almost the same fashion--completely stopped, both times on a hill :(
None.
Not being sexist, but it appears the ladies have a problem keeping the rubber side down! or are the guys just lying?

The reason I was curious...read an article recently....which I'm now trying to find, that listening to music isn't only a problem because you can't hear what's coming, but that people tend to let their minds drift which leads to more accidents...I guess that could apply to conversations too...I know for myself, running with say...beads, and being engrossed in a conversation...I'm not as aware as I should be!

Oh I forgot one... Last winter I slipped out on a really icy corner. Evil black ice.
I've never really considered myself accident prone before, but perhaps I am...
3 years Ive had one couldnt unclip fall and just recently had my first real crash. It was in hotter n hell 100 last weekend and I just bumped wheels with my buddy in front of my and my bike just totally lost control at 30mph. I have pretty much no skin on the whole right part of my body. The worst part is that all my fingertips got torn up. But it coulda been alot worse! I was still able to get back on the bike and finish the last 30 miles
A few minor bike crashes, from doing things like taking corners too fast or not paying attention to potholes.
I have been clipped by plenty of cars driving past. Usually I'm just hit by the mirror and manage to stay upright.
The more serious involved being thrown off my bike when someone drove too close to me on a bend and the trailer they were towing cleaned me up, ripped a hole in my ankle and threw me in the air and across three lanes of traffic. No serious injuries, I just lost a lot of skin.
My other decent stack involved being taken out from behind by a car who deliberately ran me off the road. I was knocked sideways and rolled down a grassy hill. Again nothing broken, just a concussion. This same guy was found to be a regular at assaulting cyclists with his car, but with a few Police in a riding group he was soon taken care of.
Well I did my last tri this season in pouring rain and winding State Park roads and was sure I'd wipe out, but kept it together. I wish I could say the same for many others. There were a lot of cyclists hobbling back to the transition area.
All my accidents happened when I was living in northern Finland for a year. I commuted to the university by bike, and when the snow and ice hit (in October) and stuck around for six months, I didn't do the smart, Finnish thing and start hoofing it or taking the bus. Nope, I continued to ride on the snow and ice. Averaged one wipe-out per week for three months of it. The good thing is I always slid on the ice once I hit, and naturally I had lots of padding with my snow pants and heavy coat, so not much damage. Just looked like an idiot.

And by the way, I'm new to road riding, and these stories are seriously freaking me out. I knew a lot of cyclists are hit every year, but to read so many testimonials really drives that fact home. Y'all be safe out there!

Every other month seems like a lot. I'd say I average a 'scary moment' every couple of months but I've only had two serious falls in 15 years of cycling. It helps to live in a rural area. My biggest hazards are farm dogs and falling asleep.

The one thing these testimonials are driving home ( as well as personal experience) is that not matter how safe you are, its either going to happen, or it isn't. I was struck crossing a street side walk to sidewalk (going down the ramp of one, crossing the road, and going up the ramp of the other sidewalk), staying within the white lines and the car still lunged out in front of me as I was already in the cross walk. I even slowed down before entering the crosswalk. Hell, if I would've been doing my normal pace, it never would've happened. But I'm still the new guy and that situation wasn't nearly as bad as what others on here have been through but theres a point to where being too safe just hinders your overall training, IMO.
Wrinkle the pavement!

So I have had 7 in 18 months - does that mean I am just a klutz?
Am I the only one out there who can't stay on my bike, bikes into poles, falls off in the roadside gravel, jogs into street signs, slips in sludge, I've crushed my tibia and femur plateaus, given myself a blackeye and more lately a concussion, torn my supraspinatus, given my shoulder joints hell by falling on them off the bike, and broken my coccyx. Perhaps it's early onset menopause??@#&? ADHD? Too much multi-tasking?!
What's your worst record for accidents in sport??
