I hope it wasn't a "have to be present to win". I won a bike (cruiser) like that once at a mtn bike race, but was in the bathroom trying to get my leg to stop bleeding and by the time I got outside they already called another number.

What are your plans for the new steed? Does your stable have room, or will you have to get rid of one?

OMG CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!
AWESOME, we need details. :)
Welll, let's not get too excited yet.
Maybe I had to be present as Kyilee has suggested.
I phoned and left messages but haven't heard back yet.
Ironically it was the first time in 4 IMCs that I have not stayed for the awards banquet on Monday.
and.. and Sunday night as I was loading my bike on the car. I removed the front wheel to secure the bike and set it down beside the car.. then drove off leaving it behind.
I guess my brain was a bit foggy.

They didn't call any further names out - I guess they go around the transition looking for a steed looking to retire then call the dude/gal up.
See if you can get a custom paint job on the P2C to POC if you have a choice.
Oh and no autograph signing for me this time. Congrats on your finish.
NewsFlash!!
I just got the following e-mail from my friend Steve King:
Dear Geoff, Many thanks and it was a pleasure for me too. It would have been even more of a pleasure if you had been at the awards as I announced you as the winner of a new Cervelo frame, for them declaring you to be in the most need of a new bike! Please get hold of the IM office or Michael Lovato who told me it was you. He said you'll be able to pick it up at your nearest Cervelo dealer. Can't be bad eh? Well done.

Okay, well, I haven't seen the new one yet, or even had confirmation from Michael Lovato of Ironman North America he is in transit - but here's my current ride - 20 year old Bianchi rescued from the City of Vernon landfill 3 weeks before my first IMC in 2003 and a veteran of 3 IMC races. It emerged from the refuse heap sans front wheel, with a ripped leather Brooks saddle (with a shiny rivet up front) narrow drop handlebars (very old school), chariot-style flesh-ripper pedals (no toeclips even). It has friction shifting Shimano gears on the down tube and I added clip-on aero-bars. It went 7:02:30 this year, but finished 50 metres in front of a guy in my AG from San Diego with power cranks and about $5,000 USD of technology, so I ain't complaining about that.

Drool away.

Haven't seen shifters on the down tube since my bike I had back in my college days...
And it IS the engine that matters!

I bet the guy from San Diego would be pissed if he heard how much training you got in, or didn't... :p Frickin' hilarious!
Congrats on the new ride PoC! I second VanJames in that you should have the P2C changed to PoC! That would rock!

Keep the new...give me the old. Bianchi ! Shame it's not in Celeste 227 (Bianchi green).
That sled of POC's is in STEEL, folks...still the best ride ever.
Had done of those old brooks lether saddles with the rivet...hell, they ALL had rivets...it's where the cycling term..."He's on the rivet" comes from...it means he's on the drops and hammering.
You really ARE a lucky guy, POC
( I'm still hoping to come across a Ciocc in my size...Italian steel bikes. The best ever.)

Cramerotti! Oy!
Cramerotti. Aye. (I heard that.)

Campy groupo, 6-speed freewheel 14-25, 50-42 chainrings, friction shifters on the down tube, Campy hubs, tubular tires, Chromed chainstays.
The rear brake cable is run inside the top tube, and it is shaped to accommodate the cable. Sort of a nice touch, I think.
A Classic.
I added the Look pedals and the clipons
I rode this one in 2005. It was my best split 6:47:45, but it is too short for me. My back hurts after 4 -5 hours of riding it in the aero bars. I like to say it is 20 minutes faster than the Bianchi, but the Bianchi is an hour more comfortable!

thanks for all the nice things you guys are saying. I hope this isn't a big let down in the end.

Calloo! Callay! Oh, frabjous day!
Michael Lovato, now of NASports, has written back to me and has confirmed that I have been blessed with a new Cervelo bike!
The Cervelo people surveying the pens determined that my bike was the "least high tech" in the race last Sunday. I guess even the new handlebar tape couldn't sneak me past their sharp eyes!
I didn't dare believe before now that I could be so fortunate. I love that Bianchi but a new Cervelo is just an out-of-this-world thrill.
I remember how motivated I was by the apparent increase in speed my first clip-on aero bars gave me. But this! This is a huge leap forward. I imagine I will be riding at least twice as many kilometres in training in the next 52 weeks!
and yes, Libor, I may even sleep with it.
I have a lot of re-thinking about my goals to do now.

Just a blur on the course now, just a blur. I am happy for you dude. Enjoy it! Only thing now is that you will actually HAVE to train.

Road Trip?!
Egads! You don't seriously think I'm going to ride it do you?
Outdoors?! On.. on.. asphalt!
Heck no, I am building a glass display case for it in the living room
- with security alarms and soft lighting. heh.
Well, I suppose I could take it for a little spin around the airport and back - if it's not raining that is.
Thanks Paul, yes it is exciting to have such a wonderful machine to play with. I am in touch with betsy at Cervelo now who will be taking me to the next step of the process. (They want me to get measured for the frame at a shop possibly the Bike Barn, then they'll ship it and we will discuss components.
Toni - Steve and Michael have been like a two-headed Santa Claus here. I think they enjoyed giving as much as I have enjoyed the gift - and I haven't even seen it yet!

Love the frame pump too..nice to see that in this day and age of Co2 and mini pumps that someone is still able to get into a full fledged Frame Pump Fight!
Really though...what a great surprise..you derserve it.

"frame pump fight"?!?
was this a popular event?
[it reminds me of the SNL sketch where everyone but susan lucci has an emmy...."Emmy fight!!"]
Ever see "Breaking Away?" The scene where the Italian sticks his frame pump in Dave Stollers wheel? That really used to happen in dirty races...Or guys riding in a pack and there is a crash beacuse folks bumped and one of the dropped guys would come up, frame pump in hand and want a piece of the guy who started it all. I actually saw that happen once...

Before the Bianchi, I had a Peugeot - Eddy Mercx's bike (not his ACTUAL bike)
My first full-sized bike was a Claude Butler frame with Campy groupo, Cinnelli, Milano drops and a leather Brooks "riveted" saddle, circa 1967 in the UK. I got it second hand of course. The bike had been ridden in the Milk Race - Phil Liggett's Tour.
Thanks christi. My Ironman ambitions began back in 1993 when I met Mark Allen in Kona the day after his fifth Kona win in a row.

No, not yet.
I got measured by Kelowna Cycle as needing a 58cm Cervélo frame.
I e-mailed Betsy at Cervélo and she has not yet replied. I suppose she was at Kona and is on vacation for a couple of weeks afterwards.
I'll drop her a line again.
