A few race details
If you take in a gel - best to do it on the bike. As far as trash, it is acceptable to drop it off at an aid station if there is one. otherwise you can just put it under the tri-short leg.
Sighting - I raise my head every 5'th stroke or so to take a quick look and then rotate and breath as normal.
Good luck - let us know how it goes.

During the bike I dropped both my gel packs when trying to put the empty wrapper back into the velcro pouch on my belt. I felt bad because I knew that the people behind me were going to see the wrapper and think "I can't believe he's littering and giving us triathletes a bad image!" Next time I'll just stick part of the pack into the waist of my shorts until I get to an aid station or transition area.
When I did my first Tri, I didn't think much about sighting during the swim, I just figured I'd following all the swim caps. Big mistake. Maybe it was the low visability because of the rain, or the huge swells in Lake Erie, but most of the people were not going the right way! My advice is to ignore other swimmers direction, and either do a few breaststrokes every 5-10 freestyle strokes, or just raise you head like the water polo swimmers do every so often.
Tape the gel pack to the top tube with electrical tape. Pre tear it just enough so that its not leaking. When do, shove the wrapper up your short leg untill you are in T2, then drop it on top of your stuff as you put your shoes on.
If you wait to take the gel in T2, you wont get a lot of benefit from it on the course. Better to take it on the bike.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Hello. So I'm down to less than a week before my first tri - a sprint (500m/20k/5k). I have a few questions on some details. I've figured out that trying to suck down a gel during T2 just isn't going to work. I can't change my shoes and squeeze the packet at the same time. On top of that, I seem to cramp up when I try to eat it right before the run.
So if I decide to eat a gel sometime during the bike, how do I go about taking care of my trash? I don't have any pockets on my outfit, so I'll likely tape the gel to my bike frame as I've heard others mention, but what do you typically do with the wrapper when your done? Sorry if it's a silly question, but I'm trying to cover all the details.
Finally, any last minute tips on sighting during the swim? That seems to be my biggest challenge at this point.
Thanks for any help.
