Sprint tri in a few hours.
By this time, Nutty, you are at the race site, transition all set up, and getting ready to go. Good vibes headed your way. Have fun and let us know how your race went. Beautiful morning in Michigan for a race. Im off for brick --my next race is next weekend.
Well first the bad news. None of my family showed up. I also did not get the top 3 in age group i planned for.
Good news though, I ran into an old friend i had no idea did these things, so that was nice. Oh yeah, and I set a pr by 37 minutes!
Fun race, beautiful day. Time for lunch

nice pr! (especially in a sprint!)
is it time to change the endurance level numbers in your profile?
Nutty, which race did you do? Island Lake Tri? How was the lake swim?
Nice job Nutty!...and a 37 minute pr, too...sorry about your disappointment at not getting a "place" but you can never plan on that...too much can happen and you never know who will show up...

Thanks for the kind words guys. A couple days have passed now and I'm still pretty pumped about my time. Just need to shave off another 15 minutes or so and i may even start placing in these things. Maybe next season.
Yeah i did the island lake sprint. They didnt seem to really have their act together too much, but it was still a great event with lots of great people. Couldnt have asked for a better day for a race either.
Question though. How do you guys manage to get your family and friends interested in this stuff at all? Im the only person in my family involved in any sort of physical fitness at all, and if it doesnt involve a job, promotion, or degree my family couldnt possibly care less. I'm doing this for me, but it would be nice to have some support from someone. Thank god for all the support at races from people i dont even know. It really helps make up for the lack of it from the people closest to me.

Congrats on the PR!
I only ask some of my family to come to my IM races.
Tho I have also gotten a couple of my kids started doing some tri's - and that brings people out! :) Maybe try to get them involved - possibly volunteer at a race that you are doing.

First off, congrats Nutty on your race. Thats a good question related to getting your family interested. My daughter is on board, she wants to compete in one next year (shes only 12 so we will see). I told her she needs to be a stronger swimmer before I let her go for it which has actually been a good thing because she makes me go to the pool more often so she can get her laps in! I'm actually pretty amazed at how good she is considering there has been no formal training and only a few pointers from me along the way.
My next Tri is coming up in October and I purposefully picked one that requires travel (about 4 hours away) and told the family that we would go up Friday after work, spend the night in the state park lodge, I would do my race first thing in the morning and then we would do whatever we wanted the rest of the day Saturday and then leave on Sunday. They seem excited about going and hopefully it will get them "into it" more -especially my daughter. Maybe I can live vicariously through her ;-)

For races I can usually get a few friends to go (depending on how close the race is to them).
With my family, its tough because the only one who "gets it" is my Dad living 1,000 miles away (marathon runner).
My girlfriend doesn't "get it" and thinks I'm crazy for getting into this loony sport :D . I'm trying to get her into some part of it (though she has a competitive spirit, her attitude is "win or its not worth trying").
Family is tough, but if you can't even get your friends out to support you at all, perhaps you need to make a few more friends. Try looking into a local tri club or put a post on Craigslist looking for a training buddy or something.
First off, congrats!
On the family part, my mom never really realized what it meant to me, and neither did many of my close friends. Then I did my first IM, and when I told my mom I would love her to be there, she said she'd try. I made it clear to her by saying it would mean more to me than having her at my college graduation (which to her had been super super important). And she said she'd be there. I had a wonderful support crowd of my mom, dad, stepmom, brother, sis-in-law, nephew, and 3 close friends. After the race (and being out there for so many hours watching racers) they had a better understanding: my family and friends were sooo proud of me and yelling and screaming every time I saw them. At the 2nd IM I did I had close to the same support crew, and this time without me asking: they asked for the dates, and when to see me, etc. It was nice that it was a race closer to where many of them live. So I guess my point is that by just really telling them what their being there would mean, they did it once, and then felt what it meant. It just took some time.
I'm lucky that my boyfriend is also a triathlete (we actually met at a race) and so of course he gets it :)

[stressed out rambling]
Today im making the transition from the, "lets see if i can finish," attitude to the, "how FAST can i finish." I'll be running my first race in which i care about time today. Pretty nervous. Also pretty pumped. This one is pretty close to home for me too, so my family is all coming out to see it. I cant wait till halfway through the swim when the knots finally get out of my stomach.
