leg shaving question

Ok so I have shaved my legs once and that was last year I really like how it felt and I'm thinking about doing it again. However the first time I shaved my legs I started to get lots of ingrown hairs on my quads. When I shaved I used shaving cream and a nice razor I'm not sure why I had so many ingrown hairs.

So my question is when I shave my legs again what can I do so that I won't get ingrown hairs? besides nair I don't feel like buying it.

its on like donkey kong

Good question.

When I used shaving cream and a razor, I had all kinds of razor burns and so forth. A real pain in the ass.

Nowadays, I just use a razor and soap when I'm in the shower. No razor burn or ingrown hairs. I decided to follow my wife's lead as she is far wiser in these ways...although she still shakes her head in bemusement when I say I "have" to shave my legs.

I don't really know what the difference is between the two approaches, but the shower method works.

If all else fails, you might want to try an electric razor and see if that does the trick.

Almost totally unrelated, but my former boss shaved his legs. When asked why, he would explain about wind resistance and riding bikes and all that stuff. The problem is, he's about 5'10" and 240 lbs (NOT from being in the weight room). I wonder if anyone ever told him that dropping 60 lbs might help his time more than shaving his legs?

Ok, here goes some more advise. One of the key factors to avoid ingrown hairs is to first rub your legs with a loofa or some other rough scrubbing shower sponge to loosen the dead skin in your legs.
Don't shave right away as you beguin to shower, wait till you are almost done so that way the skin and hair in your legs is soft and wet enough for the razor, which should be new and only should be used 3-4 times for your legs. Dull razor=ingrown hairs.
I never use shaving cream, only the shower gel I use for showering but, if you prefer the shaving cream, I guess it'll be ok.
When you start shaving your legs, do it going in the direction the hair is growing, that way with the second pass, the hair is shorter and there will be less resistance.
Don't put any creams on your legs after you shower. Your skin needs to breathe and the pores need to close. Wait a while then, if you want to, aply some just to keep it from drying to much.
Well, I hope this helps.

That's exactly what I do, with soap or shampoo while showering. The ladies at my workplace are always asking "how do you make your legs look soooo good and smooth":D But the guys at work thinks it's kinda gay...they just don't get it, and I could care less what they think.

The best thing to do is try a few different techniques and see what works best.

The loofa I agree with, everytime you shower make sure to give the shaved areas a good scrub.

I don't shave in the shower. Given the tight quarters and my lack of balance, and that's not an injury I want to have to explain. I just sit on the edge of the tub with the water running. Always wet your legs down first though, no matter what. I use a cheap hair conditioner instead of gel. It works well and doesn't wash away as quickly or easily as shaving cream. And usually lotion after the shave.

On a more serious note(if I can manage that for 30 seconds)

On the rare occasion I do shave my legs, once or twice a year, I use my hair clippers first to get my hairy legs down to a respectable stubble.

Then I take a normal shower. When I am done, I'll sit on the edge of the tub and use shaving cream and a twin bladed razor, using a fresh blade for each leg, and shaving down with the growth of hair.

I don't go any higher than mid thigh since my tri or bike shorts will cover that any way. Then I wash them off with some soap.

Now back to the real fun of

Just using a pair of clippers works pretty well...leaves only a small amount of hair and you'll never get ingrown hairs. Just watch the clippers when you get close to the ol' skin chandelier. OUCH!

I've heard witchhazel is good at preventing ingrown hair, too.

The first tiem shaving sucks anyway. I felt much better when I did it again a couple days later. I used to get ingrown hairs pretty bad till I figured out the shaving in the shoer thing. I get closer shave sitting down after the shower, but more irritation.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I saw this thread and wondered how long it would be before the link went up to there ;)
