Preparing for First Olympic Triathlon

On September 9, I am attempting my first Olympic Distance Tri.. I have done numerous bricks in the past, which transcend the 27-10k requirement, and I’ve swam consistently in open water over 1 mile.

The only reservations I have, is that its an unfamiliar distance – One which I have not yet completed.

Swimming is my weakest link, and I really have to drag myself into the water. I swim, on average, only about 90 minutes a week of swimming. Running about 45-50 miles per week, while cycling about 7 hours per week.

Is there anything I should do in these last few weeks to ensure I am adequately prepared? What does a taper (if applicable) look like for an Oly Distance Tri?

Thanks all!

Sounds like you are pretty ready...especially since you have covered all of the distances. The taper isn't too applicable but you obviously don't want to go into the race with stressed legs already. Generally on the Saturday or Sunday before an upcoming race (unless there is a race that previous weekend) I do an easy Brick Workout and from there to two more two-a-day workouts (swimming and running usually) at easier pace and then a day or two of biking...not endurance rides but 1 Hour to 1.5 Hours. The day before the race I generally do an easy recovery jog and 1500m swim working on drills and my stroke to keep it relaxed.
You should be set after that...I think the nutrition that week before the race is actually more important, not neccesarily the carb-loading craze but just making sure your getting adequate nutrients and everything is in working order.

Because taper is an individual thing and the amount/size can be based on a number of things in your training plan, try and pin it down to reduce volume but increase intensity. Bottom line? 2-3 days before the race you should feel like you're gonna blow up with anticipation to get going. THAT means you have tapered correctly.

Thanks guys! This helped enormously. I'm posting another thread, on General Training.

Kind of a regress, but nonetheless important.
