i just bought new tires after flatting about 5 times in the last two weeks. the old ones (bontrager race lites) had maybe 1000 miles on them. i circled all the cuts/holes in the old ones and picked out all the little shards and such I could find, and put the tires aside. i figured i could use them for trainer tires.

when i had the old ones off and was going over them, i could not find any penetrating holes from the inside. I ran my thumb all the way around the inside surface. i twisted the tire to open up the cuts and see if i could see any light holes. from the outside, the tires looked pretty cut up. from the inside, they looked brand new.

am i nuts to have bought new tires?

sometimes something gets buried in the tire that you can't see and causes a ton of flats over and over. if that's the case, you need a new tire or you'll go crazy. sounds like that could be the case for you.....don't sweat it, it happens. :)

I had the same problem – lots of flats and no foreign items in the tire. It was driving me crazy, I was a flatting almost every time I rode. I had friend/bike mechanic look at my tires. What he found was the rim tape on the wheel shifted a little exposing one of the places where the nipple attaches to the rim (I don’t know all the technical part names). That caused the tube to rub on metal eventually causing a small hole and a flat. He thinks the rim tape shifted because it’s been so hot here. It’s another thing to look at if you keep having unexplained flats.

Yeah that too. Get Velox cloth tape. The wider kind, not the skinny ones.

yeah, that's a good check to do. i do check the tape when i'm fixing flats at home (on the road, not usually). in this case, I'm pretty sure i'm good in that regard.

If you still use them as trainer tires, then you didn't make a big mistake. You got 1000 miles of use out of them, and are likely going to get a winter of training out of them on a trainer. That is not terrible for a set of tires.

I'll get 1-2k out of them - then onto the trainer tire pile.

It depends on the tires. For lightweight tires 1k is reasonable. I have a pair of Specialized Armadillos on my training wheels and I have >3k on them and I haven't flatted once. I may be a bit of a lightweight, but I also run over glass without brushing it off and ride on rough roads frequently. I think the tires are nearing the end of their lives because the tread is gone, but I won't replace them until I flat.
