I am planning on doing my first half ironman in the begining of May '08. I know I need to work on my base for the event so my question is this:

Is a 16 week program good for my base followed by a 16 week half ironman specific training schedule?

If I start my base phase in a week or so I will have a 16 week base and then be left with 16 weeks until the race. If I should do a 16 week base phase, then what sort of time or distance (however you measure each discipline of the sport) should I be putting in each week for each discipline? I am looking to be up there in my age group, hopefully top 5.

Have you raced a full season this year?
If so, give yourself some recovery time somewhere along the line. If you dont recover you risk injury or worse...burnout.

Remember that everything your doing now is helping to build base.

I had a slow season. I did two sprints (one in march and one in august) and one olympic (in april). Not much training between april and august. Just a few bike rides, a few runs, I went swimming like twice. I had my off season and need to get back into training

I'm looking for the same type of advice. Someone in another thread said they were following a plan that is geared toward doing an Olympic distance, when they should be training for the sprint. I'd love to see a week by week guide on how much time per week to spend training in each event. The more specific the better, but anything would be a good start for someone new like myself.

It takes a minimum of 8-12 weeks to see any gain in base if done right. Heck 3/4 of the year is base. Just stay in it unless you are in build for races. The longer the better and the more you can do the better.
