if its my first, should i just save $200 and go with an indy ironman? or is it worth the extra 250 for something like ironman wis?

anyone ever done the Redman ironman or heard anything about it? Is it a good race?

It totally depends on what you are looking for. As long as you do a good local smaller tri they are in many instances better than the large Ironman triathlons, however, the environment is not quite the same as 2,000+ people doing the same race along with the festivities and "you are an Ironman" at the end of the race. I would say that if this is going to be the only full Ironman that you think that you might be doing then it is cool to say that you have done the Ironman brand races. If you are going to be doing multiple full races, it is more of what are you looking for in the race because the small ones definatly have there benefits as do the large ironman brand races.

I would have to agree with Iron Dan, both are very good... I did the Great Floridian a couple of years ago (about 1100 athletes) and IM Wisconsin (about 2200) and I loved them both...each has a little something different to offer any triathlete.... hope this helps:D

Very true that they are both great and special in their own way. Another thing to take into account is where and when there are irondistance races. The travel is another stress and expense, and that might play a part in which is "better" for you. Plus IM-brand ones are tough to get into, so an indy can be a good way if the others are full.

I am doing an indy (Chesapeakeman) as my first iron distance event. The reasons are it occurs at the perfect time and is only a 4 hour drive away.

The only analogy that I can think of to compare the two is that I have done large marathons (NYC, Marine Corps, Boston) and I have done small marathons (Steamtown, NJ Shore, Pittsburgh). They have different types of energy and feelings to them but in the end 26.2 is 26.2 (except for Boston, but it is in it's own category). The feeling of accomplishment is not diminished by the size of the event or its sponsors.

I want to see if I can complete an ironman. 2.4, 112, and 26.2 aren't any different to me because a corporation says that they can't yell out that I am an ironman when I cross the finish line. If I can cross the line I will be an ironman.

With this said, I would still like to attempt to do Lake Placid or travel to Europe to do something like Ironman UK one day, if for no other reason than to experience the mass swim start.

I too am thinking this. I lost the triathlon fire a while back and it slowly is coming back. I hope to do the montreal IM (indy) in september if i can pull myself together.
I'm a poor uni student so this is also a factor :p
