Wiesbaden Ironman 70.3 – Race Report -
Great Job, Looking at the bike profile, that looks like a brutal race.
Well Noel, once again I bet you're glad that you got a 70.3 slot in Switz early on, eh? Germany sounds like another tough course...and again you managed to work through it. You are a glutton for punishment in the hills. If it took YOU 3 hours on the bike, then I can't imagine how long it would have taken me!!! Anyway, you better get in some FLAT, AERO training for Clearwater, my friend...ain't no hills down here ;)

Nice race!
Some good climbs on the bike!

It takes a long time to get good. - Scott Molina

I'll be the first to name it:
the Lanzarote of the Ironman 70.3 series.
I've trained in Lanzarote and racing in Wiesbaden came pretty close ( gradient wise, yeah there was wind too in Wiesbaden, but that was def. worse in Lanzarote)
Most def worth racing, this race was great!

It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!!
Congrats Noel! I tracked you online (well after it was over) and wondered if the bike was really tough or something had happened. Good job! Smokin' run :)

Thanks. Aw c'mon have a little faith in me. I'm no Normann Stadler on the bike, it was a kick in the nuts. 1500mtr of climbing on a 90k course. Some other folks had trouble tracking me too. Everybody's splits got all screwed up. Bike+T2 and No run or half the run added to the bike.
Weird. Well, at least they gave me the official splits later.
Thanks Kyillee.

Hey I thought you were training for the surprise pass by Normann in HI ;) But yeah, after reading your report I thought how hard that course must have been!

Wiesbaden Ironman 70.3 – Race Report -
Back form Germany, where I raced the inaugural Half Ironman Triathlon in Wiesbaden, Germany. I recovered well from the race in Antwerp two weeks ago and wanted to test some things out during this race. Mainly nutrition and hydration.
The swim was in wave starts and my age group (M25-29) of 119 athletes started at 08.20.The out and back 1900mtr swim felt longer ( and probably was longer too) and it was a washing machine for over 800mtr before it got better. I swam solo from the second group to the first group and got out of the water in 11th place (of my age group).
We had quite a long way to run to T1 and after I got on the bike I found my rhythm and pace.People where overtaking me and took off. We ( Bruno and I) did a recon on the bike course on Friday and it was a horrendous course, with a 15k long climb with an average of 10% in the last 20k. How awful was it? Ask the guys that decided it was a good idea to ride it two days before the race…
Bruno and I where riding in the car going: ”These guys are NUTS riding this course NOW!” Later even Thomas Hellriegel would say the bike course was tough.
Bike course profile
Knowing this I stayed cool and counted on my running. I drank, ate, watched my hart rate and cadence. “Let the hammer heads, be hammer heads and we’ll see ‘em in the run”At least I had hydrated enough, I thought when I had to pee on the downhill (twice). And rode into Wiesbaden. The crowd was cheering, man I love those German fans!!
Centre of Wiesbaden was the stage for the run. Right in front of the Kurhaus and trough the park. The run course was tough, not a fast course. Asphalt, gravel, turns, corners, climbing, it was hard to find a rhythm. But I did, as far as possible. And managed to overtake a lot of people that blew past me on the bike course. I saw it was going to be hard work to stay sub 5 hours for this race ( bike alone took nearly 3 hours) and I worked hard.
I realised a sub 90min half marathon (01.29’58”) Which I wanted SO BAD!
I came in at 05.01.10
132nd overall out of 1600 athletes. (final standings)
23rd in my age group out of 119 athletes.
I’m taking it easy now, Sept.28th I’ll race the National Military Championship Half Marathon and hope to break my old PR of 01.18’52”, then it’s off to Clearwater Nov 13th for the World Championship 70.3
