Finding time to train

I have made a commitment to a buddy that I will do IMC next year with him. We are going to Penticton to watch the race this year and sign up the Monday after, so no backing out. Here is my concern were do I find the time to put in the miles/yards? I have a very unset work schedule, put in 50+ hours at the job, wife would like me to have a life outside of work/triathlon and live in an area with a rainy dark winter. Were do you all find the hours, less sleep, indoor training, whatever tricks to help me are great.

You just have to be responsible for your time. If you need to get in a run before work, get up and get it done. Don't snooze and then not have time or cut it short (at least not as a regular thing). If you can with your job, find a way to get in some workouts at lunch (a pool nearby? a gym you could join?). Don't stay out really really late the night before an important workout: go out with friends, but leave at a time you need to. Or make it afternoon BBQs or early dinners.

Honestly, it's about priorities. If you want it bad enough, you can find time. Just gotta keep it a priority :)

Ya gotta choose. Social life and workout. Most of all the training I do is in the very early morning. Basically I get up at 4:45am out the door and train for an hour, to work. Lunch sometimes go out for a run, right after work again, workout. That sets me up for an eve w the family and I'm usually done training by 6 or 6:30. The weekends I get up at 5 or ~6, ride for 4hrs till basically lunch. Then I'm done. Sunday the same. Repeat week after week. It can be done. You just have to organize your time. For example it's Sat a.m. as I write. 7:30 now and I'm out the door for a 3hr ride, family is all asleep. I'll be back as they wake!

The big thing is to let everyone who you rely on and who relies on you, that you are making this commitment and get them to understand what you are planning to do. Like anything else in life, where there is a will there is a way. It also depends upon if you "just want to finish" or if you want to do better. But that's another story.

And as Kyillee says it REALLY about priorities. How bad do you want it?

Agreement with what has been said, you have to prioritize and figure out how bad you want it.
When I get really busy, I usually will schedule my days hour by hour so that I can get everything done, but having it down on paper is worthless unless you actually do it.

I read an article a while back about a movie director who does triathlons, I don't remember where I read it though, but what he does, because he has a such a heavy schedule, is have a lot of short workouts throughout the day. Say if he has a an extra 20 minutes, he'll go for a quick run in the morning and then in the afternoon go for two quick 30 min. bike rides. I wish I could remember where I read the article though...

It is a time management thing. Workouts early, late, and over lunch. I have long and often unpredictable work hours and travel as well. So, it just takes lots of flexibility to get the required workouts in. Your family has to be on board with the committment and understand the hours required. That said you still need to prioritize when family time overrides the workout schedule.
