Performance oriented hairstyle?
Some of both.
As a girl who has always had hair shoulder length or longer (and it's curly enough like that) I've never done the super short thing. But I also keep it a bit longer than shoulders now since it makes it easier to get in a good braid, which is perfect for racing. Easy to get into a swim cap, allows a helmet on the bike, and doesn't get in the way on the run.
Plus I like it long (this week).
As weird as this may sound, i like to keep mine a bit shagy for one big reason aside from looks. If i cut it too short, sweat pours down into my eyes and it kills. If i keep it shagy, then a lot more sweat will be kept up in my hair. May not be the most efficient way to cool down, but it keeps the pain out of my eyes.

Great question because the wife and I were having this same discussion today --she likes me with longer hair; I like it shorter, especially in the summer when racing and in the water frequently. I feel more aero (LOL) with short hair. In the winter in MICH, I grow it longer to keep in the heat!
OMG the drag from hair swimming is crazy!! I forgot a swim cap one day and the little bits of hair that escape the braid over the swim made a huge difference! I don't know how guys with hair do it without a cap on, even when it is shortish! :)
It has to be short. I drives me crazy to have longer hair (and long for me is about half an inch in length). The only benefit that I see when my hair is longer is that when I am racing or doing a long training run and I pour cool water over my head, it seems to cool me down for a longer period of time then when my hair is super short.
A number 2 buzz cut. Any barber or hairdresser knows what a #2 buzz cut is. In other words short.
completely shaved head here.
However, I did that before I ever started to tri train. I was just balding and it was easier.
I tell my friends: the entire world has always been in high def - get out there and enjoy it
"Give me a head with hair...long beautiful hair .." (Sorry,60's flashback.)
Look at my profile pic...bald as a baby's bum...Have shaved for years...before that a #1. If I still had hair on the top of my head...I'd still have long hair. I loved it. I miss it. But, as I always say now..."Don't crave it...shave it!.

# 2 on top, # 1 on the sides unless I do the mohawk. (Work kinda frowns on that last style).
I'm a very random/constantly changing individual so if I feel like doing something, I'm probably going to do it. And when it comes to hair, unless I ever get into racing competitively, I could care less if it slightly alters my performance.
Bump +1 to Nutty's post about sweat in the eyes. It sucks. Especially during allergy season lol.
Wrinkle the pavement!
Hey, that pic is at the Napa Vintage, no?
Short is great except for the potential of sunburn. One of the worst sunburns I ever had was when I didn't quite get all of my head w/sunscreen when I got my first mohawk (1986). Second degree burns on top of razor burns is simply hell. Though I'd love to shave my head or go with a 'hawk for IMKY, I'll stick with a flat top/buzz cut for the add'l UV protection it provides.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
I've always had fairly long hair until I shaved it all off last winter. I personally like it longer because I look better with longer hair, but I've never noticed it being a problem of me getting overheated...
Quite short - not a buzz cut but pretty short - just for convience in my case.

same as RV really. very short simply because that means I don't have to take a bottle of hair gel to the gym before work.

however I will be sporting a hawk for IMWI 2008. Go hawkeyes!

I know you guys all like LONG hair but---cut my shoulder length hair off this season. When I was bike commuting to work, showering, running at lunch, biking home, it was WAY too much work for the hair(retired now, so not so much an issue) esp with having to get ready for work in the locker room in short time. I will be growing it out now that I can organize working out and only having to shower once.
It grows fast so it will bounce back. Plus hair was meant to be changed from time to time :)
number 1 buzz cut
why?
intimidation!!
there is nothing more intimidating than a young fit looking guy with a shaved head. everyone seems to jump out of the way at races but I'm really a nice guy.............i promise!
dont get bitter, get better

Anything with hydrogen peroxyde. It's just good for race day, or else it'll go green.
Some day I'm going to dye my hair bright orange for a race (to match my bike)...maybe for my big 40! (I love seeing the fun people at IM who have a "flag" cut, or some other wild cut or colors!) Until then, I need to be able to pull it back....I learned in my first 5K years ago that having long, sweaty hair sticking to my face didn't make for a fun race

Long ago (before I got into triathlon) I decided I resented paying for haircuts so bought a pair of clippers and buzz the head myself. As Nutty points out, on hot days the sweat does get in your eyes on the bike and can burn like hell. I've learned to push my helmet up a la Vinokourov. Doesn't always work. Don't think I could go back to long hair - (1) I'm too cheap, and (2) I think I'd melt on the run on hot days. Mostly I'm too cheap.
I got tired of paying $10 a week to be "clean cut" so I bought a razor for $30 and now my wife cuts my hair (To stubble) in the shaower. Saves money and usually leads to some extra-curricular endurance activities.;)

Do you triathletes keep your hair long or short? I kept mine very short because it kept my head cooler in hot weater. I've let my hair grow out a bit and now my gf wants me to keep it long because she likes it that way.
Now I'm getting paranoid that my head is overheating and that I'm not getting the best performance out of it. Then I saw Faris Al Sultan and he had a long mop of hair and he did just fine at IMWC.
Do you consider your hairstyle for performance or looks?
