Hey guys...just wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

I woke up this morning with extremely bad shooting pains in the side of my butt any time I walked or even moved. I went to my chiropractor and he said that I had an inflamed muscle that was pinching my sciatic nerve. He did some things and I feel better for now. Just wondering if anybody else has had this experience and if it was just a one time deal for you. I really hope this is gone because I and doing a century in a week and a half

Yeah, sciatic issues seem to be fairly common on here lately. Fortunately I've never had it, but have heard of chiro helping it a lot. Hope it feels better soon!

I have had that intermittently this summer - especially after a hard climbing day, much of it in the saddle.

BBB says its the piriformis muscle.

The solution is stretching, heat, massage, stretching, wash, rinse, repeat..

oh, and ibuprofen helps.

I'm having similar problem (check out my post in the Health/Nutrition forum) only the tingling and numbness goes down my leg into my shin. Cool! I'm pretty sure its the piriformis and have been doing lots of long stretching and the ice/heat 1-hour routine....its just kinda difficult to ice that area of your butt :p Anyway, what kinds of "things" did your chiropractor do?

but you probably have no trouble getting help with the massage, right?

He did some stretches and masseges with a few different machines and then set me up on some electrode machine that relaxed and streched the muscle. Then he just told me to ice it 3 times a day. Ive been icing it all day today and the pain isnt as bad but its still there every once in a while. If the pain is shooting all the way to your shin I would defeinitly go see a doctor

I think its all referred "pain"...I read my Trigger Point book. And its actually not pain, it just gets kinda numb...makes for an interesting run!

I have the same issue. Check out trigger point for some tools that help. I use a foam roller to stretch out the iT band and it seems to help. Just got to keep doing the stretches or it tightens up again and causes the nerve pain.

I had this too. The paraformis muscle would press on the syatic nerve. It after 3 years of stretching and massage, a docteor gave me a cortisone shot (Very painful!!!!!) and it cured it.

I now do the stretching and massage as preventative measures.

I just got diagnosed with sciatica and have been in therapy for a few weeks for my IT Band....now the dr. thinks I might have a fractured femur. IMKY is in 9 friggin days!

Celebrex has helped a hell of a lot with the pain in my butt/leg/oustide of knee...if after a couple months it's still bad I'm going the Cortisone route.

I suffered with sciatica a fews years back. Nothing seemed to help until the therapist used some type of heat machine - kinda looks like a sonogram wand. You don't feel the heat, but it goes directly into the muscle - one treatment and the pain was gone. Also, sitting on a tennis ball will help - sounds funny but it works.

Good luck!

It actually is ultrasound like the sonogram :) Just uses the heating properties instead of the imaging ones. Good stuff... I use that for tendon inflammation and pain and it helps a lot.

Sorry, man...I know how frustrating it is!! Mine has nearly cleared up. I was worried because I ran an hour yesterday and 13 miles today. I think the key has been LONG stretching (holding for at least 30 seconds) several times a day and the ice/heat. I also stretched before I ran and sat on/massaged my booty with a tennis ball on my way to the trails...maybe that helped?

Look into a foam roller like tribro suggested but use it on the piriformis muscle. You can stretch that muscle specifically by laying on your back with knees bent. Cross your right foot over your left knee (assuming the pain is on the right side), place both hands on your left thigh and pull it toward your chest. Should feel the stretch right on the piriformis on your back side. To add the foam roller just get into the same position and then sit your right cheek on the foam roller until you find the most tender spot. Hold for 20-30 secs (it will hurt), then release.

I find a weekly massage, ice, heat and stretching helps mine.

If it is the piriformis. Don't mess around, find someone that practices this form of Physical Therapy http://www.ptosi.com/. I missed out on running for 5 months of running because of this problem. My sister a Physical Therapist refered me to PTOSI in Minneapolis. After 3 visits I was back running. Now I just make sure to stretch after every workout and so far it hasn't come back.

This can be the result of a few things.
1. Muscle strength imbalances betweenleft and right sides. One leg ends up doing alot more work and hence tires out alot more.
2.Week core
2. Hip flexor (exasperated by the aero position) gets tight and then pull you forward causing the piriformas to be worked more and become very tight.
3. The tight piriformas leads to a pulling on the sacroilliac joint. Which is a joint at the bottom of the back that has fine tolerances. its meant to slide but not, but not too much or too little.

Solutions:
Initially - rest, stretch, massage

prevention - single leg exercises always starting eith the weaker side and only doing the same reps as that side withthe stronger side
core workouts - pure gold
regular massage, I find using a semi/solid rubber ball about the size of a tennis ball available for a couple of bucks at most works a treat. Roll around on it to find the sweet spot to unlock the muscle.
