Is anyone planning to do the IM Arizona? This will be my 1st IM and I have tons of questions. For starters:
#1 Training Plans - I got one from the Web - Trifuel.com - a 36 week plan. Are there any good ones that don't cost to much?
#2 I'm planning to do a 2.4 rough water swim on 9/3/07, a century ride on 9/30/07 and the Honolulu Marathon on 12/8/07. I know I probalby should stick to the web plan, but...What if I did the marathon slow and easy...?
Any thoughts?:o

I understand wanting to do the individual distances prior to the IM. It is a definite confidence boost. I did the same. Only issue is to make sure there is a LOT of recovery time after the marathon and that it is well before the event - like 4 months or so.
I got my training plan from trainingpeaks.com.

I also did a marathon and a century before my first (IM AZ in 05) and it was a good confidence booster to know I could make it. My marathon was probably a bit too close (mid January). But it was good to go into an IM knowing sorta how that marathon would feel.

I don't have a training plan reccomendation right now... but the big thing I think is to find one and be convinced it is right *for you* and then to trust it.

Welcome to the world of IM training :)

I like that advice. Marathon in Dec, IM in April.
My biggest fear is bonking and not finishing. I have never "bonked" where I could not finish a race, but this distance and all the bad stories I've heard...I know nutition is very important and I got to try it on my long days. Is there a way to prepare mentally?
Also I'm starting to read about the right clothing, I'm leaning to changing completely for each event. Any thoughts?

Working out your nutrition and hydration (and electrolytes) is huge - you just have to work it out in training - on long bike and runs. It is a very individual thing to determine what your body needs and will tolerate on those long sessions.

As far as changing - whatever is most comfortable. Many people will change completely in transition. I don't, but that is what works for me.

Mentally, you do need to get your head around the training - and the distances. After awhile a 5-6 hour bike, or a 3 hour run is just a normal workout - there are books out there that address the mental aspect - such as: The Triathlete's Guide to Mental Training (Ultrafit Multisport Training Series).

For IM AZ (my first) I swim in wetsuit with tri shorts and a sports bra under it. I pulled on a bike jersey in T1, and changed that for a running top in T2. I also went with new socks I think. I just thought it would be more comfortable, and it was worth the slight time it took for that confidence.

At the other IM I've done (and at the one this year) I wore the same clothes the whole day. I will only have socks on the run, and I wear a tri top instead of the cycling/running ones. Oh, except if the swim is no wetsuit this year -- then I will pull on the tri top in T1.

Experiment with clothing, especially on your long brick days and see what you are most comfortable with. If you are really fast and looking to place or qualify, it becomes even more important not to spend that time in transition.
