Right Gear to start with in a Tri??
Depends on how big the hill is right out of transition. At Vineman, for instance, you basically can't go wrong with the lowest gear possible, as you start on a pretty steep grade right when you mount.
If it's flat, start in whatever gear you're comfortable with speeding away from a stop sign.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
My bike has 10 gears and i usually start in 7 or 8 if not higher. Im strongest in the bike and run though, so i'd say whatever youre most comfortable taking off from a stop at.

Basically just want to be in a gear that is easy to pedal in while you get clipped into the pedals. Check out what the course looks like at the bike start, as stated in a previous post - if hilly go with a light gear.

When Chuck Norris does triathlons, he keeps his bike locked in on the "ass kicking" gear the whole time.
I on the other hand keep it in an easy gear so I don't have to mash from the start.

I'm a newbie, and will be doing my first race this saturday august the 18th. I wanted to know what the best gear pre-set your bike to before the race, so your transition to the bike is smooth to begin with??? I'm also open to any advice or tips anyone is willing to provide...Thanks!
