Swimming Pool Etiquette
I think the only real etiquette is to announce that you will be joining a lane - be sure to establish if going side-by-side which is more typical if 2 swimmers in a lane or in a circular fashion - usually if 3 swimmers in a lane.
Make sure the other swimmer sees you before starting to swim.
More than 2 in a lane is difficult due to varying workouts and speeds of the swimmers.
Never seen anything regarding a time limit. Most people don't swim past an hour very often.

W/re the differing speeds of swimmers in a lane, be courteous. If I come to the end of the lane and a faster person behind me is gaining on me, I'll go ahead and wait the extra 5 seconds to let them turn around and get in front of me rather than making them pass me mid-lane potentially colliding with the other folks in the crowded lane. Unless you're in the middle of a time trial, will that extra 5seconds of wait time really ruin your workout!?
And, if you happen to be the fast person in the lane, try not to be too rude to the slower swimmers. It's not an open water swim, so shoving, pushing, kicking as you pass someone are really uncalled for.

Most pools have signs at the end of the pool. They tell you to swim on the right side or left side.
You have to be flexible in your work outs adjust to all kinds of problems. I sometimes get into the fast lane and there are some pretty slow swimmers in the lane. So I change my workout to fit what I run into.
The 2 pools I swim at are pretty loaded but I make the best out of what I have available. You always run into jerks I just put them on extinction.
I was going to this pool where there was no lane lines, and there were more people than lanes. I didn't even have half a lane. It was very irritating. It was a public pool, and I wish it was open more, because then it wouldn't be so crowded.

So, I was reading this post on this Blog and it made me wonder, what is the Swimming Pool Etiquette? Is there a maximum period of time you should use the lane when there's people waiting? Can you guys share these rules for the newbies?
Thanks!
