Imky
according to their website, it took about a week

Since it was the first year for it, it was slow to fill. I registered knowing only the date and distances, and the area it would be in: there was no course info, etc. So that was also part of it. Depending on how it goes, it will fill faster this time. Although probably not in a matter of hours like some of the more established ones -- I think even IM AZ (the last new one) took days or a week to fill even this year (but I could be wrong).

I'm guessing you'll have a few days at least. It's better to sign up and then have to cancel than not sign up and pay for a community slot (like I did for this year).
You guys still doing the IM this year?

Mike and I will both be there racing. His competative level is yet to be determined -- he's still definitely feeling that car that hit him during Vineman!
You gonna be there? I don't remember where we are staying (it's all at home) but right at the finish area. So we'll have to try to meet up!

I'm in too! Bib numbers should be out soon I would think. I had plans on signing up for IMFL last year, but this race was added and it's closer to home. Looking forward to meeting all who come.

Once we are a bit closer we'll have to start a thread of who will be there and when to meet up. I think those IMC folks are jumping the gun a bit... but it also just scares me how close we are!!

Sweet. Hopefully Mike when the gun goes off Mike will be tip top....and hopefully he doesn't get hit by another car! ;) I'm at the Galt House. I'll be there on the 23rd, so I'll have plenty of time to acclimate myself to the weather - NOT!

Can someone help me translate the elevation profile of the bike course into something meaningful? I've been taken before by courses that look flat but end up nightmarish based on the graphs. To me it looked relatively flat when I google-earth'd the course. But the elevation profile does not look very flat as it is listed on page 15 at:
http://www.ironman.com/assets/files/races/louisville/pdf/Athlete_Information_Guide.pdf
Anyone care to comment on the difficulty level? Anyone know what the wind conditions are in and around Louisville in the summer?
Also--the swim...do we start out going into or with the current? How bad is the current? More importantly, how bad is the quality of water?

We are not staying at Galt house but in another of the hotels attached to that area right at the finish line. We arrive the 23rd as well. Our bikes left today (I'm nervous for them... it's their first trip without us by their sides).
For hills I found similar elevation changes and angles near me to get an idea of it... Oh we do have a similar ride we have done. Here is the Vineman profile (from my garmin). Here is the IM KY one from another garmin (I just find comparing 2 motionbased ones can help since all sites do elevation a bit differently). At Vineman Chalk hill was ~200 ft. of climbing over ~1.25 mi. Looks like the IM KY out and back on loop 1 will be similar to that. Not sure how much that helps, but I just look at both profiles and find spots that are similar to get an idea of it, and to know "hey I can do that!" about them :) I find comparing the course profile to stuff around me gives me a better feeling for what to expect. No, I'm not a GPS geek, why do you ask? ;)
I've heard the bike course will be rollers, constantly. That you will be changing gears (in the back) much of the ride. A couple spots might make you need to change in the front to the small ring (depending on how strong a rider you are).
I have heard the wind might be an issue, although probably not side wind, but head or tail.

The swim- tread water for a few mins and starts against the current. Swim back with the current. Supposedly, they have locks/dams/something to kinda decrease the current. Could be pretty cool-tough 1.2 mile swim out and flying back in. Haven't heard a lot about wind. I'm sure there's a little on the first few miles on River Road simply b/c there always seems to be wind around rivers. All that I've read, there's no real BIG climbs(i.e Canada/Lake Placid), just lots of rollers. I did a similar HIM course last year in Ky and it was mostly get to the top at about 12+mph and coast down the back at 20+mph. Good thing is it looks as if the first and last 11-20 miles are flat so it should be perfect for 1) starting the bike, getting the HR settled down and start taking in fuel/fluid, and 2) nice easy spin coming back into T2. It's really going to be interesting. I'm really more concerned with the weather than I am the course. I'm here in Memphis,Tn and have always said if I can train here, I can race anywhere. Hopefully we'll get a little break from the upper 90's low 100's. But conventional IM wisdom says don't worry about the things you cannot control and focus on the task at hand. I'm really, really getting anxious. The taper has definitely taken off. My wife says I've been kinda crabby lately and that I seem to have lost my patience with our new 6 week-old baby boy- with all the crying and such. Oh well, better days are ahead.

Thanks GPS Geek! The data you posted was exactly what I was looking for. Chalk hill wasn't 10% as scary as everyone said....I thought the Vineman course was pretty smooth and definitely not nearly as challenging as the announcers made it out to be. KY looks like it has about 6 or 7 chalk hills, though! I shipped my bike off tonight, too....with my new rear disc. Not sure if I should have done that or stuck with my conventional rear rim. Oh well.
I do have to agree that the beginning and end look great. No worries there...but we'll have to see about the middle, eh?
As for the temps....yeah....it's been pretty cool this whole summer in CA....was hoping to get some good 100 degree days to acclimate myself a bit, but it looks like that's not gonna happen.
How clean is the water? Should I get Hep A and B shots?

Haha... I'd be scared to get shots this close enough you react weird to 'em or something. We've had a number of warmer days here in SoCal, but I know I'm not as acclimated as I could be.

Spend your last week or so wearing long sleeved shirts and pants and trying to stay warm enough that you feel like you should take it off. Don't and just suffer through it and that should get you nice and acclimated for the heat there.
Good luck at IMKY you guys! Have a blast and enjoy your day you've worked so hard for! :)

I am going to try to make it there to watch. Somebody that trains at the gym I go to is doing it. I never have seen an Iron Man... except on TV, and would really like to do one some day. Next year I am going to try and half and see how I do. I just started doing tri's this year. Good luck to all of you!!
Ok ok I'm going to start a thread now to make sure we can get info from each other and meet up (that means you too durhamj11!) :)
