Exactly! You've already qualified, might as well enjoy the day with everyone else who qualified or won a slot. Take in the spirit of Pele and the big island and thoroughly enjoy the Hawaiian culture mixed with triathlon in the most beautiful place on earth! :D

Also I enjoy your weekly training total posts because it is interesting to see what someone who is a top AGer but not pro/elite is doing while still working a "normal" job, etc.
On a side note at what point do you think a coach became a useful tool for you? By that did you use a coach to go from MOP to FOP or did you use a coach to go from FOP to veryFOPY/winning events? Or is this is the first time you have ever used a coach as you attempted to qualify for Hawaii and then compete for a top AG spot? Hope my question makes sense. Basically I am at a point were I am someplace between the front of the MOP and the back of the FOP. I am wondering if a coach will get me to the FOP or if just continuing to work hard and getting the volume in is enough for me to improve to the level I am looking for.

My coach is Nick Goodman, his company is Durapulse Performance located here in Scottsdale AZ.
I started doing triathlons in May of 2006. My first race was an Olympic I trained myself for. I came in 3rd in my AG, so I suppose I began my tri career FOP. I hired Nick the same day I finished that race, he lived in my town and recognized me at the expo. I wanted him to train me for IMAZ the following April and I didn't feel comfortable that I could do it myself being such a newbie.
Since then, I have learned so much and now feel that a coach is even MORE valuable now than ever. Besides having a good training ethic and good genes, Nick really maximized my potential for me and put me in a position to contend for and earn a Kona slot at my first IM. I know I would not have been able to do that without him. If you have a goal of really pushing yourself to the best you can be, I think good coaching can be a key element. It certainly was for me.

New perspectives and new realities...or Houston, we have a problem...
Swim- 8400 yards
Bike- 141 miles
Run- 41 miles
Total Time- 14 hours
This has been a very interesting week. I was looking at my schedule and one thing kept popping out at me. I'm not really doing very much in comparison to my same schedule prior to iMAZ. I asked my coach to explain what we were doing here and he opened a new world to my eyes. Your first trip to the World Championships is about the experience, he said. I want you to enjoy your day, feel good, finish on your feet. It's not a day for PR's, it's a day to cherish, he told me. He is so right. There is no time I need to complete the course in to qualify for something elese. I have never trained for IM without actaull trying to finish in a specific time. Now I am training to be one very happy age group finisher. Would I rather risk injury and never making it to the starting line by flogging myself today? No. I have been set free of the shackles of my own expectations and it is gloruiuos!
Now, the harsh new reality. MY RUN SUCKS! Somewhere between IMAZ and now it has packed up and moved on. Coach and I have diagnosed the problem, though, so there is hope. Apparently, in an effort to keep a reasonable heart rate in the soaring temps of an Arizona summer, I have altered my run form for the ill. My stride rate has gone in the crapper and I have to bust my butt to stay even close to 90 cadence and my heat rate is jacked to kingdom come. The answer will lie with some run specific weeks coming up incorporating treadmill and track work to fix this. I feel very relived that we have diagnosed the problem, now it's time to get back on form.
