Anyone in the midwest or willing to travel to the midwest my local running club is holding a 24 hour run in May of 2008.

It should be a lot of fun, they have personalized awards for everyone completing over 100 miles. Based on the time of year it is perfect for the midwest people to kick off their season.

The website is

www.cornbelt.org

In addition to making this event aware to everyone I am also asking for advice from anyone who has competed in ultra distance events like this. Any advice on training, nutrition, etc would be appreciated. I have a year of so of IM specific training under my belt, but 24 hour run is a different beast all together.

I've run 22 ultras now and up to 100k but not 24 hours...have biked a few 24 hour events...
A very accomplished URer and friend of mine has a great site
ultrunr.com there is a specific section dealing with 24 hour races...I'm looking for a 24 hour race in the spring...Cornbelt has been around for awhile..I'll have to look into it.

thanks for the site. If you are looking into that 24 hour race it would be awesome to have you there. You can be the guy to kick me in the butt at hour 18 when I try to sleep on the course. =)

Actually,Kev...folks do take naps! Of course they aren't hitting 100 miles either.
It's do-able...if you are looking at 100 miles, that's 4.16 mph...you just have to get used to being on your feet for loooong periods of time. It's not about speed. It's about being consistant ...and anyway you're only 22! Staying up for 24 hours should be no problem. ;)

after looking at the site again I saw that the special awards are for 100k. However I would like to hit 100 miles.

Ultras are a huge mental game...even more than Ironman.
Cornbelt is a track ultra...4 laps to the mile,100 miles, that's 400 laps. Can you wrap your head around 400 laps of a track?
Track and loop events are harder than trail runs mentally...I did 100k on the track a few years ago...248 laps. Tough.
I'm a firm believer that if you can honestly get your head around it...you can do it.

Are you sure its not the Indy 500?? I have enough trouble with 3-loop run courses. I couldn't imagine 400 laps! For that distance, I think the best would be a point to point, or at most, a few big laps...there's more to look at to distract you from what's happening. Can you take a book or an MP3 player at least? :p

I'm with you there Star! My longest race in track was a 300 (hurdles) since I thought it was boring to run in a circle... and that was just once!! ;)

lap courses are common for 24 hour races...that way you pass by an aid station often, have access to a second pair of shoes, hot food...etc. and since the race is a time race (24 hours) it's easier to count laps and actually know how far someone has run in the time alloted...I'm planning on a 24 hour in the spring on a three mile loop.

I'm not so sure it'd be easy to count laps for 24-hours  So, do they put an armband on you every time you pass the aid station...heehee!

They have very diligent volunteers who make sure every lap gets counted...You don't have to.

the race I am doing has one volunteer for each runner. I believe they work 5 hour shifts doing nothing but making sure they count your laps and make sure that you stay alive.
