That's so stupid! They couldn't get sponsorship because companies were worried about having their reputation mired because of speculation?!? Lance was tested everyday of every TdF due to speculation. No one went running with their tail between their legs then, surrendering sponsorship!

OR

This was their way of breaking things off with Disco and starting anew with "Team Slipstream"...

This is almost as rediculous as this years TdF. Very disappointing.

I read it more as they stopped even looking for sponsorship... but I'm not sure how honest that was.

Ya, sucks. I heard though that there was some grumbling.

This is really sad. I wonder what the real reason is? It seems odd that the team that won the TDF and Paris-Roubaix, with the backing of Lance couldn't find a sponsor. I don't know what it would be like to see Hincapie's red, white, and blue with T-Mobile pink...

I'm not surprised. What kind of company would be willing to pony up $45 million or more for 3 years in a sport with so much bad press lately. They could get more exposure with a 30 sec spot Super Bowl commercial. Hopefully the sport cleans up.

I think that Discovery was willing to sponsor them before because of the marketing appeal of Lance. They did some exclusive LA documentaries; everyone on earth was wearing a Livestrong band, etc. Now that is gone PLUS all the bad publicity around cycling right now….kiss of death. I hope this Slipstream Team really catches on…. Or else they could all ride for Jelly Belly.

This had kind of been in the works for awhile though (as the article said, since February) and Nike, AMD, and Discovery Channel had already decided they would be going there separate ways awhile back. It's too bad that Disco is being disbanded; hopefully Levi, Contador, Hincapie, Popovych and the rest of the bunch will be able to land other solid spots (Slipstream?). Also, I've heard from LBSs that Nike is going to trim back their cycling line...it's too bad because Nike could have really promoted the sport even further with Lance and their savy marketing team...also their apparel line is pretty good but I guess everything will be going on sale now!

Except people will point at your and tell their colleagues "Looky, looky those guys who get EPO shots everyday!"

(That was a joke)

What I think is that cycling is one of the few sports that has been fighting doping. The rest of the sports just close their eyes and let it go loose.

I seriously doubt if I was wearing that jersey that anyone would think I was doping. It's not like I am blazing along at 30 miles per hour :D
