Help Me Swim!!!
A coach is probably the way to go.
I started with TI (Total Immersions - book and DVD) that got me going. Then went with Rich Strauss's Swim E-Book.

I started without a nose clip and couldn´t do it. I even race with a nose clip now. Thank God have never had any issues with it being kicked away or something similar.
I would suggest a swim coach too and regarding the breathing...... it takes time.... with practice you will have to play around with breathing to find out what works for you.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
I'm a newbie too! And swimming is my weakest link. I started with reading books & on line tips etc., but I found that getting a swim coach worked best for me. Having someone watch your stroke, breathing and body positioning in the water is invaluable! If you can't find a coach, may be you can join a swim masters group?
Good luck and enjoy your efforts!
A coach will get you going in 2 weeks or less, man! They can observe you from outside and correct things that you don't even realize!

I'm a beginner too, and a did get regular help from a coach- it was so worth it, I'm a totally different swimmer than I was before. For me though, it still was a matter of swimming 3 times a week, at least. I practice in a pool, and in the ocean, as that is where the event is. My breathing position, and pattern are definately different from one to the other. In the ocean, I need to take more breaths, and turn almost into sweet spot sometimes depending on how rough the water is. Good luck to you!
I just recently decided I was going to start doing some triathlon events. I had a rude awakening when I started training that the pool kicks my a$$. The secong I stuck my face under water I got a nose full of water. I'm probably going to start with a nose plug but I need serious help on the breathing techniques. anybody have any suggestions? I am thinking about a swim coach. Anybody know of one in the Puyallup/Tacoma WA area?
There are a couple of masters teams down there I believe one that practices at the Weyerhaeuser pool . You can check out usms.org for local teams
Another idea would be to try TI. They have (almost monthly) a weekend clinic up in Bellevue at the Pro Sports Club. It goes for 2 days so not too bad to drive up from there. My husband did it after watching the dvd's and reading the book. It helped him a lot and he did his first tri ever a HIM in June after taking the class in March. He will be doing IMC in August and should finish in under a 1:15 or so. Check out their website at:

This technique works for some, and not for others. Its would be good to get you going at the very least. Good luck!

Inhale above water ;)
I also live in Puyallup. I train at the Korum YMCA, and just got back in the water after taking this year off (I just moved here from Boston). I did four small races last year and loved. I also started from scratch.
Take your time. Try to read some articles and find some quick technique videos on youtube.com to get the basic stroke down inyour mind. Then start off with some short workout a couple time a week. Work up to 10 25 yard laps, then 10, 50s, then 10 100s. You'll be a championship swimmer in no time.
If you want me to meet you at the YMCA I'd be happy to.

He11 Ya! If you know how to swim. I have actually been working on it and getting better. I'm kinda starting to get the breather down to. I just went and watched the beaver lake triathlon in sammamish are and I am jacked!! I cant wait to do my first. My wife even said it looked like so much fun she might try. I'm actually going to try and start training in lake water instead of the comfort of a heated pool.
Alright well PM me and I'll meet you, if you want
I cant send you a message cause it says you are still registering. Under contact info it should say "send private message" and yours doesn't.
I think I can receive PMs now
