Mountain bike advice?

I'm hoping to buy a mountain bike in the near future and have no idea what to look for. Clearly, there are no mountains in Florida, and it would be used more for cross-training and fun rides. Any suggestions on where to start?

I have heard that the Giant line is a good value. I have a santa cruz blur lt, love it for the mountains in CA and bombing hills, but I wish I had something more racey because I am thinking about doing some Xterras.

This is a pretty good value:

I doubt you would really want/need a full suspension bike in FL... but you might just like the looks or feel of it.

If it was me, I would get a Redline Monocog or something super simple (remember riding with one gear when you were a kid? It is greatness). But probably a bike with either no suspension, or just a suspension fork.

What type of bike to get depends on how hard you are going to be riding it off road. From what it sounds like you are going to be doing to me, I would skip getting a bike that has rear suspension, they are alot more expensive and in your case it is probably not necessary. A couple things I would definately get would be a front suspension fork (comfortable on and off road) and disk brakes(stop alot better). My mountain bike is a giant and I am happy with it. Look around and make sure you go to any bike shop and ride every type off configuration the have to see what you perosnally like the best.

Star you need to get out of my training thoughts :) Or at least train with me!

I just bought a mountain bike for Mike this weekend -- we are now both on Specialized Epics, which I *love*. However, as others have mentioned, you probably don't need full suspension. I'd still recommend checking out the Specialized bikes, as I have nothing but good things to say about mine.

You're smoking some stuff here. FS is actually MORE valuable here due to the tremendous amounts of rrots and rocks that our trail systems traverse.

I can ride a hardtail all day long in CO and UT. I get home, I ride FS. My back cant handle the jarring it takes. One might be very surprised at the quality of riding we have around here. Theres only a couple trail systems in central florida that are flat. The rest of em can be very technical and challenging.

We should get together for a Monday run and I can give you a MTB breakdown. I can even let you borrow a hardtail that should fit ya if you wanna try one out. Dont let Croom and Flatwoods paint your picture of Florida mountian biking. We also have Alafai, Santos, Ravorback, Carter Park, and Boyette within and hour and change.

Cool...thanks for the input. I'll start looking at the LBS and see what they have to offer.

Triguy, I'll take you up on that offer :)

On The Last Exterra In Oleta River State Park I Came Accross A Guy From North Carolina And He Told Me That Some Of The Trails Where Even Harder Than Over There ..... I Ride A Santa Cruz Super Light And Love It..
But Specialized Canondale Trek And Giants Are Very Good Bikes
