Training Wheel Suggestions

I was curious if anyone had a set of training wheels that they would strongly suggest. I have a set of Mavic open pro rims with Ultegra hubs that I am not super pleased with, they are always coming out of true. They are also the only set of training wheels I have and I have two bikes that I ride regularly. I am 185lbs, so I am on the heavier side for being a cyclist. I am currently looking at a set of Mavic cosmic elites or a set of Easton Vistas or anything else that is in that price range. I just want something that spins well and is bomb proof. Thanks in advance.

I have an old pair of Velomax Circuit clinchers and love them. They are bomb proof, totally solid.

I use a very conventional strong pair of Alex wheels - cheap but they stay true. 32 non aero spokes. They're a no-frills set of wheels that I never have to worry about. I particularly like the difference in feel that I get once I slap on the race wheels.

I am a big fan of the Mavic Ksyrium line. So I would think the Cosmic Elites are probably OK. For my training, I roll the Ksyrium SL's and I weigh 215... Never had a problem. Even hit one with my truck... had it trued and dished and its just as good as new.

I have a set of Bontrager Selects that I train on and have been very happy with.

My Bonty Selects have also served me very well.

My choice in a new training wheel would be- reliable, bombproof, and HEAVY. As long as you have race wheels, too ;)

I have Easton Vistas (came stock on my bike) and I like them a lot. Very tough and they keep true. Keep an eye on eBay, as people who take them off new bikes frequently will sell them there for under $200.

I've been using the Shimano WH-550...I've put about 3000 miles in so far on some not so friendly Iowa County roads and they have remained trued with no spoke blow-outs. They just came with my Shimano 105 group and I've seen them retail for about $250. They are not exactly featherlight, but they do have a deeper sectioned rim so they are more aero than the price-tag suggests. I've even done races on them and blown by guys on HEDs and Zipps.

Ach, you're all going to start throwing rocks at me, but..

I train on a pair of 27" aluminum wheels. Actually they aren't even a pair, not a matched set. I found one on the side of the road, abandoned with a bent and rusty skewer, and the other came with the bike frame when my friend retrieved it from the city dump!
I stripped 'em down replaced the rubber, re-greased the bearings. They ride fine and I don't have to worry about them getting damaged or stolen.

I ride about 50k a day averaging 28-30kph on these retro wheels, come race day I switch over to a pair of 700s with 700x23mm rubber clinchers and average about 28kph around the IMC course.

On my $100 wheels I beat a lot of people with $2300 wheels.
I dunno, maybe they enjoy their stiff bumpy 7 hour ride.

If they still work, no need to replace them for training. For racing, it's your decision--a good pair of new aero race wheels can be quite expensive for not a lot more speed. Also, a lot of people race on the stock wheels that came with their tri bikes. I've raced exclusively on my "training" wheels for the last 4 years (that's about to change, but that's another story).
