We're a little more than a month out from Cancun 70.3, and the intricacies of flying overseas for a race are starting to hit me. Any thoughts or advice from anyone who has done this, and especially anyone who has traveled to Cancun or another 2nd/3rd world location? My questions are especially around bike and nutrition logistics.

Specifically:
- I'm presuming we can't fly with a floor pump and full mechnical kit the way we drive to races. Do they typically have sufficient bike support onsite to do minor repairs, pump tires on race morning, etc...?
- Obviously, can't fly with CO2 cartridges due to explosive risk. Again, are international expos typically well-stocked?
- Same thing with nutrition...should I fly with my peanut butter, gatorade, etc... or hope to find it there?

Input welcome!

you can fly with the pump if you check it, just not the c02 cartridges. PERSONALLY I would bring any food you plan to eat that has to do with the race. Having traveled around other 3rd world countries (not mexico), I know that finding your brand can sometimes be difficult. If you have a specific drink (For example I use Accelerade) and are used to that and want it on the course, I would bring it.
Heck, I bring my own gu, and drink just for marathons that don't have great water stops for races here in the US.

Yes, no CO2 cartridges
- last year they only had about 50 cartridges for sale, go early to the expo or ask right away, hopefully enough people complained after last year that they won't have this problem
- during the race they did have 1 person on a motorcycle going up and down the 3 loop bike coarse with a pump

Yes, bring pump, especially if you are not staying at the host hotel
- make sure to bring connector if you have a disk wheel

You can find gatorade and peanut butter there. I would bring my own, especially something like gatorade endurance and peanut butter. We packed it in our bike case or our checked bags.

Last year it was quite dark at the race site, it was hard to find stuff in your tri bag when setting up your transition. Might not be a bad idea to bring a head-lamp to see your stuff, if they have an early start again.

Sounds fun....! Anyway, I pack my own nutrition (because I only use Hammer products), tool bag(minus the CO2), gear, shoes, helmet, etc. into the bike box...you'll be surprised how much they can hold! I never take a pump to the race..I always bum one from another athlete...its something I don't want to lug around the world...and tney have them in transition.

Customs may open the box or scan it, but I've (knock on wood) never had a problem with missing or damaged gear.

Also, you might want to check with your air carrier if there will be any extra charge for the bike box...could be close to $80.00 each way...just be prepared to pay at check-in.

Have FUN and enjoy a few margaritas after the race :D
