Hello from Madison
Hi there. I'm new to Madison and the tri world myself, but I have found there are several outstanding bike shops in town with staff knowledgeable about a triathlete's needs. My fav pick is Willie's Bike Shop. They're very newbie-friendly. There are 2 locations--one has lots of Felts, Specializeds, and even Scotts, and the other Treks, etc. The floor manager at the location nearest UW was really helpful. You can test out as many bikes as you like, and I've heard their bike fittings are thorough. Decent prices too, although you just missed their largest summer sale. I think there is a triathlete at Erik's Bike Shop too, and Cronometro is phenomenal!
Also, do you know about Endurance House in Middletown?
Di mana ada kemauan, di situ ada jalan (Where there is desire, there is a road). – Indonesian proverb
For bike setup, the big decision you need to make is road bike vs. tri bike. Lots of newbies use a road bike with or without aerobars. This is generally cheaper than a tri bike and more versatile. The downsides of using a road bike setup in tris are pretty much not noticeable for the first year or two of racing.
I think it's a good idea to start with a road bike. If you give up on triathlon, you'll still have a nice bike to ride around in groups, on long rides, etc.
I bought a used road bike when I started out. Added aerobars one year later, then upgraded to a tri bike the next year. I still have the old road bike and ride it 1x per week during training. It's nice to have a backup ride in case anything goes awry with the race bike.

As for the bike advice....it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Hi,
I am a new triathlete from Madison, WI.
I just completed my first triathlon today. It was incredibly fun.
I am looking forward to doing some more triathlons and getting a nice bike. Any advice on that count? What's a good bike setup to go with as a newbie?
