What to do when the tri is over...

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have asked this question, but I couldn't find any related topics. I finished my first tri on Sunday, and I plan to take this week very easy. Is it okay to resume a light workout load next week, I have a road race in September I need to start training for but I don't want to do anything too soon. Lots of people have told me not to do too much or I could cause an injury. Any feedback on this? Also, I want to start planning my training season for next year, any recommendations for books? I read Joe Friel's Bible, and it seemed a little hardcore for me, but I suppose I could take what suits me... if anyone has a better choice that would be great, thanks!

I wouldnt go too easy this week. shorter yes, but get race pace stuff in there. 50m sprints w/ rest in the pool, short race pace intervals on the bike, and strides and drills for the run. Makes yu sharper on race day.

After the race? Try to go for an easy ride the next day. I prefer a light MTB ride for casualness. You will eb sore and hurt, but you need to get those legs moving or youll REALLY feel it the rest of the week. Take it easy, but get out there and do stuff.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

+1 on all the training stuff. Except the mountain biking.....I make fun of mountain bikers and their long sideburns!;) That and guys who race in speedos (which I'm thinking about doing anyway.....kinda like the guy who gets a mullet for a day just to have a mullet).

Depending on the distance and the priority of the race I wouldn't back off much at all. The longer the race, obviously the more time I take off. I would never back off for more than a week or so unless it is an IM then it is longer. But like they said make sure to keep your intensity up. And I must agree with Gator mountain bikers are a silly group of people.

I will start by saying I'm no elite, but I subscribe to the listen to your body philosiphy. If you feel good and want to get out there then do it. I personally feel like taking a week off periodically helps me both mentally and physically.

Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body!

I was wondering the same thing and was getting ready to post. Having never done any type of endurance event before, I haven't been sure what to do with myself this week. Especially since I am not sure whether to do another tri before the season is over, or switch to swimming mode (and even then, I haven't decided what events I want to focus on). I've decided to take this week to concentrate on routine, schedule and basics and by the weekend I'll get back to "normal".

So, far what I am doing seems to be working for me in combatting soreness and exhaustion from the race. The night of the race I walked for about 15 min to warm up and did a complete stretching routine for about 30 minutes. Every workout (and I jumped right in the day after) has included an extra long stretching session at the end. I've done about 2/3 my normal routine at this point. My race was Sunday, Tuesday I threw in some sprint intervals on the bike, and today I did some hard sprints in the pool. Everything else has been med-low intensity (more med than low).

My goals for this week:
Eat healthy foods
Take my vitamin
Solid amount of sleep
Carry my 32 oz water bottle with me and at minimum, drink the whole bottle twice each day.
Warm up and stretch every day
Recovery (not rest) week intensity, about 2/3 volume with a few hard sets and sprints.

I'm going by intuition on this, not experience. Your goals might be different.

Thanks for the replies, I took the 'listen to your body advice', took three days off, and was back at it full of energy on Thursday!! Felt great, and I can't wait to get in even better form for next race!!
