If you are not bonking or running out of fuel, your nutrition is ok.

The only time you should expereince any sort of kick with a gel is if it's caffeinated. Even then, it's not a major kick in the pants. In much the same way, Gatorade is just a constant energy supply and keeps your electrolytes in balance. I would say that as a sprint distance athelete, the Endurance formula is not necessary. The regular formula works very well and is quite a bit cheaper.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I find I don't really notice Gatorade/Gu giving me an energy kick when I take them. However, I certainly notice when I don't take them, as I get that "low" feeling that precedes a bonk--low energy, bad mood, hunger--after anywhere from 60 minutes (running in hot weather) to 90 minutes (biking) without them. Gatorade/Gu help keep me operating at an even level, which is a type of energy kick if you think about it, even if you don't feel it working.

Try going out training with out that GU. I dare you. You will Bonk and it is not fun. I only take them if I am going out more than 2 hours than I use them every hour.

I don't think you'll find any magical elixirs in gels where two minutes after you take one, you're pinging off the walls chock full of energy.

It's a very subtle effect.

Do an experiment: Go on a two-hour ride without gels for a week or two. Then repeat those rides with your gels. See if you'll notice a difference.

When I was 5 hours into a 7-hour race last winter and was running on fumes, I noticed an immediate pick-up within minutes of taking a gel. Unfortunately, I was so far gone at that point that one gel hardly made a dent in my state of nutritional idiocy. :o

I use gels and electrolytes religiously. For swim workouts that are going to be around an hour, I generally have one before and one about mid way through (I generally do these early in the morning so it's Gel for breakfast).

For my run workouts, it depends heavily upon the distance but I generally take one before heading out and anything after 35 to 45 minutes and than at those intervals afterwards. For the bike, I can't imagine doing anything longer than 50 minutes without a gel and some electrolyte mixture.

I have been using Gatorade Endurance Formula, Nuun Lemon-Lime electrolyte tablets for water, and Apple Cinnamon HammerGels. They are all fairly tasty but I would only recommend using the Nuun supplement after 50 to 1 hour of good sweating...the sodium content can be a little much if you use it for less active periods and can kind of dry out your mouth. With two water bottles though, it's not really a problem.
