I've always drank coconut water and was wondering if anyone has any info as to it's +/- versus a sportdrink like gatorade...

it has way more potassium and sodium but less carbohydrates...

any thoughts?

Not tried Coconut water, but prune juice has more potassium then a sports drink. If you take it after a meal, you avoid its famous side effects.
Where do you get coconut water or do you make it?

Sounds like something the Professor (Gilligan's Island) would concoct. Then make a coconut creme pie with the left-overs. :)

well you can go right to the source and find some baby coconuts but it's much easier to find this stuff available in stores.. I guess mostly health food stores.. zico.com

there are other brands as well, but if theyr are selling pure coconut water they should all be the same thing...

from what I've read it seems like it could be a great natural alternative to sport drinks... but I was hoping someone with expereince training with it would have more insight.

The big downside is that it can get expensive to use regularly. I think I've seen them around a dollar to 1.30 per 12oz can.
It is fundamentally just water with small amounts of sugars, vitamins and minerals so I wouldn't really expect miraculous performance enhancement compared to tap water and a little gatorade powder.

I did read that coconut water was used in WW2 as a blood plasma substitute because this source of water could be counted on being sterile inside the coconut.

Tough to carry a sack of baby coconuts around the course, or even the little boxes. I use the O.N.E brand from whole foods.
Its been my new recovery drink for the summer mixed with choc milk. I thinks its great for pre exercise top up of electrolytes naturally - because we will consume more than enough non nonatural stuff out there - or as i use a post exercise recovery drink.
