My goal for next summer is to complete a HIM and do most people do the 70.3 ones sponsored by ironman or just random ones that are held?

There are a lot of good HIM races out there that are not in the 70.3 series. It's might depend on what you goal is, do you want to try and qualify for the 70.3 WC? If so, then that's the only way to get there. I've done two 70.3 races and one non-70.3. The 2 70.3 races cost more but they were well run. The other HIM race I did cost much less, but there was a lack of support on the course and there were questions if the course was the right lenght.

Personally, I like the non-official-70.3 races. I've done an official IM and some non-official 70.3's, and I just like them better. In general, I've found the race support to be excellent in smaller races, and I'm not really a big crowd person so seeing massive numbers of people at the finish line is not that important to me (though I know some folks really like it for motivation).

In general, when I pick a race I go more off of the course, the location, the date, the weather, etc. than who is putting it on.

There are lots of good HIM's out there. I haven't done one in the 70.3 series mainly because none are close enough to me. The ones that I have done around here are run very well. Talk to people that have done the races that you may consider to see how well they are run.

I've done loads of both...Until two years ago the were all just HIM...70.3 is nothing more than than the name for HIM races owned by the World Triathlon Corp.
I'm like Mom. I prefer the indie races....many of which have been around far longer than 70.3.
Alot of folks do 70.3 for a chance at a Kona slot or to go to the "World Championships" of 70.3...which is only a World Champ because the WTC says it is.

See there is nothing like the true IM experience there really isn't. I can imagine the 70.3 being pretty close to that but honestly do that once in your life and it's cool but I like Indie a little bit more...

Some people around the web are saying that the 70.3 series is overrated and that people have lost interest in 70.3 WC event in Clearwater. Well, I'm not sure about that. They just added the South Africa 70.3 race and the rumor is (very reliable) that at least 3 or 4 new events will be added to the race schedule in the USA later this year. They will be run in 2008.

As stated before, there are a lot of good HIM races out there. They will tend to be cheaper and smaller. You just have to find the one that interests you and hopefully it's run by a good company.
