Reflective Tape

I'm preparing for my first IM (UK). I recently received their competitors handbook online. It states that "It is compulsory that your run kit displays suitabe reflective strips both on the front and rear of your garments."

Has anyone used reflective anklebands instead of tape? Is this allowable? Trisports.com advertises them as a better alternative to tape.

If you use tape, do you just cut some strips and apply to the run shorts before race? Or apply in T2?

Thanks Mike

The reflective tape requirement is kind of a crock... I don't think anyone has ever been penalized for this. But like a sheep I bought the tape at the expo before IMWI. I applied it to my shirt before the race - yup cut strips. Most of them came off throughout the day - mostly cuz of the rain / wind etc. I have the reflective wrist/ankle bands for early morning runs - they work well and don't really notice them when wearing them.

Yeah I saw that at the race, spent my (too much) $$ for tape at the expo, and put the strips on the gear in my T2 bag (I changed my top at that race). I don't think anyone noticed or checked.

Sounds like a good question to email to the race people.

I wore an ankle/wrist band because I "selectively" read:eek: the documentation, and by the time I realized I was supposed to have it everyone was sold out of the tape. No one said a word.
No worries, I know in IMC if you are out after dark they will hand you the "stick of shame" (ahahah ---a glow stick like the kind you would night dive with) to carry once you get into town around traffic.

I didn't have reflective anything on...oops. Ok...maybe my shoes did. Nobody noticed and it was pretty dark out when I was running. I had put the stick on dots on my longsleeve that I thought I'd grab from my special needs bag, but I didn't end up doing that. Put a couple stick on dots on your race number, it's the one thing that will stay with you through the race regardless of what you change into.

Just to caveat that I don't think any one EVER has been brought off of the course because of that. We all frantically buy it because we are scared and want to make sure we are 100% copasetic but I wouldn't worry about it.

Put me with RV and JStyle. Bought it in a panic at the expo, paid roughly a 300% markup, and nobody seemed to be checking for it during the race (it would have been tough to see since so many runners were wearing garbage bags that night). If you want to sleep easier, go to a hardware store or maybe a craft store and buy some for much less and bring it with you. In fact, buy extra and sell it to your fellow competitors at a profit!

Sorry for the delay responding - traveling without internet access.

Thanks for the feedback. I bought the reflective ankle bands as I figure its not a bad idea to get into the habit of wearing on early morning pre-sunrise runs. I'll also pick up some tape and bring it with me just to be safe.
