Are triathlon specific cycling shoes necessary? The reason I ask is that I have used the same pair of Northwave Evolutions since 2000. I've been racing duathlons and sprint tri's for the past 4 years, and everyone keeps telling me to try tri shoes. Will it add anything other than a strap to pull my shoes on while on the bike? I've basically been putting on my shoes and running in them to the end of T-1. Am I losing time or anything significant?

I'm now training for IMAZ in '08 and 70.3 Orlando. I've bought some new gear, and was wondering whether I should invest in some shoes. I've worn Sidi shoes in the past with some success, but I've always come back to my Northwaves. Thanks for the replies.

This thread talked about this and which tri-shoe people liked.

They are easier to get into and out of so it will make a difference when mounting - if shoes on the bike - and easier to get feet out of the shoes prior to the dismount line so can leave the shoes on the bike and hit the ground running.

Something I learned at a transition clinic. Besides being easier to get in and out of, the strapson tri shoes open outward - (road shoes open inward) - for those who leave their shoes on the bike, the strap opens away from the chain so it can't get caught.
