Pain around the kneecap
A lot of knee problems like that are a result of poor tracking in the joint caused by a stressed muscle that's pulling the knee slightly off so that it rubs inside while you run. It could be a number of things: IT, tight adducter....really any muscle from your lower back to your knee is a strong possibility. It could also be another muscle higher up, but that's less likely. Go to a massage therapist who specializes in sports injuries or a PT. If that's the case, it can probably be fixed in a few weeks with regular massage, strength training, and tons of ice.

Not fast enough.
Was there a discrete event that triggered it, or has it become gradually worse?
I've recently dealt with pain around my kneecap, except mine was along the top/outside corner rather than inside. My orthopedist believes it's a stress fracture, which I sustained during my marathon. Whether it's a fracture or not, it's clear when the damage occured - a 2 mile steep downhill section at mile 10 during which the road was also sharply cambered to the left, putting mucho stress on my left knee. It's basically healed now, but I had to lay off everything that made it hurt (which included biking and swimming) for a few weeks.
I hope yours recovers well, whatever it is.
The type of pain you described has only been caused in my case, by running on the same side of the road all the time. That's just me but invaribly when I experience knee pain it is repetive "tracking" with the slight change in the road level. Again, that's just me.
no it was no event just running and more running. i will try and vary where i run to not "track" as much. thx
I just got the same pain last Monday at the end of my run. It is a sharp pain behind my kneecap. I did run downhill on Sunday, the hill didn't feel confortable but it didn't hurt at the time. i tried to forget about it but after a bike ride and another run on Wednesday, I realize I have to rest. if it is the joint, what type of food/nutrition should I eat?
I just read that post "http://www.trifuel.com/training/health-nutrition/jointly-speaking" The author is talking about "glucosamine and chondroitin supplement" What food is rich in these supplements? Any idea?
most patella over use pain can be due to tight quads and calves. try lots of stretching, both dynamic and static

I am having some pain on the top of my knee. it is around the kneecap and goes from the inside of my knee to the top. i dont know what it is. if i rest for a week it will just come back so i am not taking another week off because i got the steamtown marathon on oct 7. any ideas?
