Need advice on swimming in full-sleeve wetsuit
I like the full suit, but my stroke does depend on the arms a bit more. I was always one of those mediocre swim team people with a relatively flat stroke who never really kicked and I'd pull as fast or faster than I swam, so the buoyancy helps me quite a bit. (Basically, I was a breaststoker who couldn't do the long axis strokes...)
I also am one of the those chilly-bones people who wears a fleece in 75 degree air conditioning. I do get hot pretty quickly when I am exercising, but for those early morning races when its in the 60s, its worth having the wetsuit on before the start so I'm not standing around shivering with my teeth chattering and lips blue, etc.
I think I remember that the first race might have been harder on the arms. I haven't noticed a difference since. I have a QR Superfull and I've had it since the beginning of the 2005 season. I don't think that you should be feeling the neoprene stretching through the shoulder, maybe try pulling the sleeves up a little further (I have long arms, so mine is about 3/4 sleeve on me.)
If you can get it off reasonably quickly, I'd say its definitely worth a try for the race. Good luck!
I went out and did my usual saturday lake swim with some other folks, we swim across the lake and back, which is a bit more than 2 miles. Part of the way back, my arms started feeling really tired. Like the effort of stretching the rubber on the recovery part of the stroke was taking a lot more out of them than normal.
I had the same experince several weeks ago and I did not like it. I have a sleeveless wetsuit. Several weeks ago I forgot my wetsuit and we were doing a 2 mile swim, getting ready for our IM race. We swim from my friends house on a lake, so I was able to borrow one of his extra wetsuits, luckly we are pretty much the same build. I come from a swimming background. Out and back on his lake is a mile. Initially I like the wetsuit because it kept my arms warm. I liked his QR suit because the rubber around the shoulders was really thin and flexible. On the second lap of the 2 mile swim I noticed my arms were getting tired too. I started to blame it on all of my training and being tired but I think it was the suit. I didn't like the feeling, not sure if I would go back if it always feels like this. So, I'm curious to hear what others say.

I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it wasn't anything ridiculous. Maybe half a dozen swims. I went and did a two hour swim last month in my wetsuit and felt fine. I do have kind of a flat recovery, which might have something to do with it, though, and my stroke is pretty much all pull like catwood's. I wish I could give you more advice, but it did get better pretty quickly and once it did I liked swimming with a wetsuit better than not.

Not fast enough.
The same thing happened to me when I got a Promotion wetsuit. Try pulling the suit up higher througout your legs so that there is more material in your upper body. Hopefully this will result in less vertical stretch in the torso rubber and eliminate most of the pressure on your shoulders.

I too had a similar experience with a ProMotion full. I gave up on it quickly and went to sleeveless so I can't tell you how to tweak it, but I am interested in hearing how it works out.

So my hubby got me a full-sleeve wetsuit for my B-day and I got a BlueSeventy Helix. I am liking the suit, very flexible around the shoulders, which was important to me. It fits well, very little water getting in and my armstroke feels pretty natural.
I went out and did my usual saturday lake swim with some other folks, we swim across the lake and back, which is a bit more than 2 miles. Part of the way back, my arms started feeling really tired. I have an Oly race this coming weekend and now I don't know if I want to wear the suit or not. Some of it will depend on water temperature (at 73 degrees, I was roasting after about 3/4 mile on Saturday), and some on whether or not I think the swim will make me more more tired or not.
Anyone else experienced this when starting to swim with a full-sleeve suit? How long did it take to get used to it? I don't have a super-strong arm portion of my swim stroke, and rely more on a combination of good body position, good glide, and strong kick for my speed. This suit seems to make me much more buoyant, which takes some of my kick away and is making me rely on my arms more.
Any other tips for swimming in full sleeves for the first time??
