Counting Strokes
one arm is a stroke; one right one left is a cycle
one arm is a stroke; one right one left is a cycle
Thanks for the answer, but that's what I was afraid of. That means I really truly monumentally suck. I won't tell you what my 100 meter count is - you'd laugh until you had to change your shorts.
But, I have about 50 weeks to improve before the Life Time tri in Minneapolis. Somebody please send me good vibes.
Just work at it one 50 at a time. Count your strokes and add your time. 72 would be a good start. 36 strokes + 36 seconds.
swim golf, great drill. in my prime i think i was able to pull off 24 strokes in under 30 seconds.
Sorry,
but I would like to understand ;).
What do you mean by "Just work at it one 50 at a time" ?
The number 50 is 50 meter (not yards)?
A this is for 50 m pool or for 25 m with (oper) turn?
Best Regards,
PD.
It does not matter what the size of the pool - 25 yards 50 yards or 55 yards, 25m or 50m. I am saying not to count the strokes for every length you swim. Some people count all the time and are more concerned with counting than concentrating on what they are doing. The golf score of course changes slightly depending on the length of the pool.
Stroke counting and the golf score help. It gives you like in golf a score. Par in golf 70 or 72 is agood average for 18 holes. Par in swimming a good score is obtained by a very good score for the 50.
Thank you geochuck for answer.
Now it is more clear.
I would like to compare my 50 m golf score with your and others scores in the posts.
But I have two questions:
1. How do you count your 36 strokes, what is P? (Please see below.)
I know the calculation:
SPL = (L-P)/A - strokes per length
L = 50 m
P = 0 (Do you have P = 0m when you have 36 strokes in 50 m?)
A - arm span ( for me is 1.41 m)
Theoretically my SPL should be 36 SPL.
2. How do you do your measurement?
Do you begin to swimm with 0 m/s at the begining of the pool or you count strokes in the middle of swimming a few lengths with turns?
Best Regards,
PD.
My wing span is 78.5 inches which is 1.9939 meters finger tip to finger tip.
I am 6 feet 3 inches tall = 1.90500 meters
I did this today... I usually do a push off swim a 50 starting every 2 minutes x 5.
I pushed off the wall and swam a fifty meter swim it took me 25 strokes in a 50 meter pool. My time for the stroke count was 35 seconds. that is a 60 golf score. Now remember I am 74 years of age. I have slowed down.
I have done 20 strokes for a 50m in a 25m pool. 30 seconds which was a score of 50.
You should also know in my youth I was a 25 sec 50m swimmer.
geochuch
-that is very impresive golf score.
I think (but I must check) I am not even close to this score.
I am beginner in swimming.
My wing span is 71.3 inches = 1.81 m finger tip to finger tip, but I read somewhere that in SPL = (L-P)/A formula should be used wing span wrist to wrist (my is 55.5 inches = 1.41 m).
I am 5 feet 10 inches tall =1.78 m.
I have strategy to lover SPL to ~ 36 in 50 m pool, and during time carefully speed up my strokes. Does it good strategy or ?
Best Regards,
PD.
I have heard the wrist to wrist measurement (which wrinkle do you measure?), but that is not practical. The Olympic swimmers I know do it finger tip to finger tip.
When doing stroke counting it is not to develop just speed. It is to get get proper balance, maximum distance per stroke. Speed is developed by doing Max Vo2 workouts no more than twice a week.

Noobie question, probably been asked and answered many times. Counting strokes, each arm is 1 or each pair of L-R is 1?
