When to replace tire
My Conti 4000's have wear indicators! I usually end up with a cut before I wear through them though. I currently have 3 sets of them and have not been able to wear out any of them. (well, once i got a cut and the other 5 are going strong)
Most tires have wear indicators - often grooves that when they are no longer visible it's time to replace the tire. They may also feel kinda thin and flimsy when you defalte em a bit. If it were me I'd buy replacements, get a few miles on em and shelve em til the race.
1000 miles for tires isn't that much I think you are still good to go for a while.

Agreed. I had nearly 5k's on my last set before I finally wore them out. Generally you'll be able to tell if you start picking up more flats than are usual. Then again, it never hurts to have a spare (or 3)

Apart from the usual signs (large tears, punctures or squaring off) are there ay other determinants>? I have about 1000miles on my Rubino Pros and am 5 weeks out from my next race and will be racking up another 500-1000miles.The rear obviously wearing more than the front - any tell tale signs to signal replacing other than above?
I replaced my pair for IMC 2 yrs ago and only used them for the race (and a short break in ). Took them off immediately after and now will use them again this year for IMC. My old ones were fine and now my husband is using them to train on. I Just like the comfort of knowing they are new-ish. Just me.
Now 1000 miles isnt much from what I have heard, and you will probably be fine. Other than punctures and squaring like you said I dont know of any other way to tell.

is it wise to "rotate" the tires b/c of the rear wearing more??

At that point you might as well replace them. Just my thought on it.
