Coming north for the Steelhead 1/2 IM (70.3 if you prefer). Anyone have any good info about the course? Swim will be cool for me (Floridian), but that is good, cause I get to use my wetsuit! What about the bike, hilly? Should I bring my disc? What about the run? Hilly, shade, etc. Thanks for any input. train hard and race harder! Laryy. Tampa, FL.

LB-

Steelhead is a great race. I did it last year and will again this year. Here is some info:

Swim: You get the benefit of the current from lake Michigan. You either a.) jump off a pier (about 7 feet down) and swim North, or b.) have a standard start and swim south. Last year, we jumped (some dove) off the pier and swam along the shoreline. There are buoys every 100m (I think) and it was really easy to sight. The only difficulty was the sun rising into my line of sight.

Bike: Bring your disc. It is rolling and fast. You can really move. There is a newly paved section about 20mi in (if I remember correctly) and you can cook. The last 15mi are a straight line back to T2. This gets boring and last year lots of people were forming mini pelotons. I hope they crack down on the drafting this year.

Run: It is totally different this year. Last year it wasn't too shady, and there were numerous people (me included) who blew up on the run. This year, it runs north through the Whirlpool campus. I hope there is at least a little shade. It looks pretty flat, though.

Overall, it is a great, well-organized race. The expo is on the beach, your friends/family can hang out on the beach just 100m from T1/T2. We bring our dog and my wife hangs out in the sun while I suffer. You will really enjoy the event.
