early morning sharks
now THAT's a problem...
Not sure I would be OW swimming in the dark with out someone else around "just in case" At least then you would have someone to call 911 if one of your toothy friends needed a late night/early morning snack! :D
They'd probably just eat me out of pity for my deficient stroke. Either that or they'd be rolling around on the sandbar laughing their fins off...
The local sharks are usually getting ready for court in the pre-dawn hours so you should be okay.
I'm from Clearwater (just left last December). Go check out Maddog Tri club. They have group swims if you are worried about toothy fish. In open water, I always say, "don't be first, don't be last."
As a native, I can tell you that most sharks are Sand or Nurse and won't bother you. The last death to a shark bitet was from a Bull shark. A man in Boca jumped off hid dock in to feeding frenzy to get a closer look...not smart.
The shark bit him and let go (they don't like human meat) and was scared away. The man died because the bite hit his femor artery. Not because of a loss of tissue.
I was about to bring this one up- but I thought it was in the St. Pete Beach vicinity on the back canals along the channel.
IMO, it's too much of a gamble. Sunrise and sunset are the predator's hours, I dont wanna give them a reason to taste the buffet.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I heard about the Boca incident. The sharks I've seen on the beach here have all been 5 feet or smaller, and I know they can see that I'm bigger than they are so they would most likely err on the side of caution.
I hadn't thought about contacting the Maddogs. Thanks!

Sunset around these parts is only bad news for the smaller fishes - people are good to go. Sunrise, I don't know too much about.
What does unnerve me for a moment is when a school of fish is sticking with me, then suddenly scatters.
Often, I run at the beach at a very early 2:30 or 3:00 A.M., and now that I am starting to tri train, I am also considering adding openwater swimming to that particular workout.

You've got serious issues - the kind that will make you a really good triathlete.

Yeah, in addition to X and Y chromosomes, I probably have a Z somehere in the mix.
Do you wake up early for the runs or never go to bed?
It's usually a sleep-run-sleep affair, but occasionally I'll stay out at the beach and watch the sunrise. Great way to start the day.
Swimming in Australia there is always a shark problem as all of you may know.
They teach us from a your age at nippers (Jr life savers). if your swimming before or after sunset ALWAYS take a knife and a friend and if you see a shark take out the knife stab your friend and swim away from the blood pool.
dont get bitter, get better

Check out my blog!
Maybe it's just me growing up in the midwestern U.S. so my only exposure to sharks is Jaws...but it seems to me that if you even have to ask the question, then you probably shouldn't be out swimming with the nice little fishies! :-)

That gives "swimming with a buddy" a whole new meaning!

This post is insane.
If I tried to do something at that hour my pillow would hunt me down and kick my ass. We have very strict rules my bed and I.

6 ft bull shark? I could take him. Any of you Tampa guys up for a swim? I'll bring the chum! After kicking some Gator a$$ here in Gainesville, I think it's time to move on to bigger and better things.

Not fast enough.

Every lake in Florida has Alligators in it. I'll take my chances with the sharks.
The key is to not swim when sharks are feeding between dusk and dawn.

From working in the Bahamas and living on the central FL Gulf coast I know that toothy fishes are always there, and they really don't bug me. Sunrise to late nighttime I'd swim without concern since I somewhat know which ones are there as well as their habits, but I know nothing about their pre-sunrise activity.
Is anyone aware of what the local sharks are doing at this time of the morning?
