Can't isolate shifting problem

If anyone knows a better place to ask this technical question please redirect me. In the meantime here's my problem:

Recently changed from STI to bar-end shifters. Had new cables installed. Expected shifting problems from new cable stretch corrected at shop twice. New 9-speed Shimano Dura Ace shifters. Four year old Shimano 9-speed 105 rear durailer. Mechanics thought the problem might be the rear cluster. Replaced it and the chain (Ultegra 9-speed 12-25 cluster, 105 9-speed chain).

In shifting up, the 15-cog sprocket gives slight chatter. Shifting to 14-cog sprocket does nothing. If I want this gear I must shift past it (to 13) and then come back to it from the other direction. Frustrating. Hoping I don't have to throw more money at this. Rear durailer was fine before the upgrade. Don't see why it would be a problem now.

Of course the problem only shows up under the stress of riding and not on the bike stand at the shop. Several different mechanics at different shops can't seem to solve this. Any help much appreciated.

were the cable housings replaced? Were the cables greased prior to installation?

Don't know if the cable housings were replaced. I will have to ask the mechanic. In the meantime, if this were the culprit, though, wouldn't all the gears have be a problem? As is only one (two at the most) is a problem.

From the way you describe the problem, I would assume that your barrel adjuster is set too tight. Since you brought it to several mechanics, I assume that they've already readjusted it several times and it's not the problem, though, but it takes like 10 seconds to readjust it, so you might as well try it. If that works, never go back to any of those mechanics ever again.

Either the derailleur is catching or like Gator says, the cable is set a bit too tight. I'd try loosening the barrel adjuster a hair and see if that helps.

And it's not uncommon for things to work in the stand but not on the road. Try stopping mid ride and loosening the adjuster 1/8 turn at a time and see if that helps.

I concur that it's a cable tension issue that can be rectified by adjusting your barrel adjuster. However, remember that when adjusting your cable tension you start from your smallest cog and adjusting only SLIGHTLY on your 2nd to smallest cog until you hear no rubbing.

If this doesn't work I would check your chainline on your bike.

goto parktool.com for awesome instructions on barrel adjustments you can do yourself!

Thanks for the advice, folks. Going for a training ride today so I'll give it a shot.
