Wheel Dilemna

So I have a small dilemna on what to do with race wheels. I have a Hed Jet 60/90 combo that I have ridden and like. I have been looking for a disc wheel and just this weekend found a Renn 575 in great shape for a good price and bought it.

Now I found someone who has an almost brand new Hed 3 front/Renn 575 rear that doesn't like riding them in the wind and wants to trade straight up for a deep wheelset and would be willing to trade me even for the Jets. If I do so I will just keep whichever Renn is nicer and sell the other one.

So for those with experience with the Hed 3 fronts, how do you like them and how do they climb? Most of my races will be on rolling terrain and or courses like IMWI. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the H3.

I would greatly appreciate any comments/feedback from anyone running an H3/disc combo!

Thanks

I think you'll be fine. A guy I race with down here runs H3s front and back on his P3 and had a great race in Portland a few weeks ago, which had two big climbs and tons of rollers. Another I guy I ride with on the UF cycling team had H3s front and back on his Trinity for a while and consistently won most of the TTs in Florida before upgrading to Cat 2, and even now he went top 10 at the Pro/1/2 State Championship with a 56 min 40k. I've never really had trouble running a disc in strong cross-winds. It's all about confidence. If you just duck your head down and concentrate on going forward, the wind isn't really a big deal at all. It's a little trickier with a trispoke, since it'll cause a very small vibration if you have a strong 90 degree crosswind, but that doesn't happen often.

Take this with a grain of salt: If I were you, I'd sell both Renns and buy a carbon disc. Much stiffer.

I am not worried about the wind so much as the weight I would be adding.

On a rolling 12 mile course last weekend I was able to average 24.9 on a pretty breezy day with the jets.

I hadn't thought about selling both the Renn's for a better disc! That's a good idea!

I just went back and looked at times from Portland (nasty hills). That one guy who I race with the P3 and trispokes went almost exactly my time, and I was on a disc and deep front. Usually I'm a little faster on the bike at sprints in Florida.

I run an H3 front and had the same concerns. It's heavier than my Easton Vistas, but I can't tell the difference in climbs. On descents, though......there's noticable difference.
