Doing short stuff with IM fitness is COOL.

So this last weekend was a time trial that is part of a year long 'quad games' (Swim, bike, run and x-country ski) that I entered. It was a short TT, a tad over 12 miles, and I have been training for IM length stuff for months so I didn't have my hopes up too high, plus I was coming off a tough week including a 112/4 mile bike/run brick the weekend before and a 14 mile run thursday night and a solid bike the friday night before.

Plus I hadn't been training for an all out sprint tt so I knew the body was in for a shock as far as HR went!

Race was on a rolling course and it was pretty windy. I was #194 out of 396 so I started mid morning and the wind was picking up more than the people that started an hour ahead of me. (I later learned that most people, like me, were seeded alphabetically, except for ones that have done this in the past and were expected to have a fast time; they got the earliest start times.)

Had a little trouble getting up to speed the first couple of miles then settled in. Passed a lot of people and felt good the whole way through, although legs were definitely not the freshest they could have been.

Finished in 28:52 for 11th place overall! Got 2nd in age groupe (M30-39) and finished 7th overall for those that were doing the whole event and had already done the swim back in April. (You can do one or all of the events). I'm currently in 8th overall place out of 300 participants, with the only bad news being the 5 mile run is 6 days after IMWI, so I'm not expecting too much on the run!

But the coolest thing is I was almost completely recovered within minutes of finishing and went home and did a 2+hour bike workout. There's something to be said for this IM training/huge base building. I'm now looking forward to the speed that will come to do the short stuff once IMWI is done! This is the second or third time I"ve done a short (olympic or less or TT) event this year and I'm amazed at how quick I am able to recover from these short but intense efforts! No matter what happens at IMWI I know that the last years training has paid off huge for other stuff and if I switch to speedy short events the training will have been well worth it!

I had a very similar experience last year. I did almost no speedwork training for IM and saw my times drop significantly in sprints, 5ks, etc. during and after the season. This season, I'm doing nothing longer than an Oly, and having a ball going (relatively, for me) faster than ever.

I'm looking forward to the short stuff myself.

Very true. I have never done anything but train for IM distance.Since last year, I have done 5 Olympic diatsnce races and PR'd everyone of them, finishing in 2:03 at the last.

The most encouraging thing is that in two time trials and one olympic this year that I have done well in they have all been at the end of big training weeks. My legs felt like Jello last weekend yet I was still 11th out of almost 400 people. Can't wait to do some short stuff on rested legs after IMOO.

On the other hand, trying to alpine climb with Ironman fitness is not cool.

Here in NW Pennsylvania I don't get too many chances to try alpine climbing!

LOL! Thanks Tikal :)

Having said that, kkocan, we will never be able to win an Olympic distance race. The guys that do, they beat me up pretty bad, are so freakin' fast at that distance because they train it.

I feel ya - aerobic fitness certainly has its limits as to what other activities it translates to...I recently tried bench pressing after an 18 month layoff - everything felt SO HEAVY!

Definitely. I know that the only olympic I've done was this year and I did a respectable 2:12, but I had an awful swim (for me) and just kind of used it as a training day but the serious olympic guys were out for blood and man were they quick.

The winner was around a 1:55 or so and the other top few guys were also below 2:00, but man were they hurting themselves on the run as I passed them coming back in as I was going out the run course.

I am thinking it will be fun though to take all my IM fitness/base this winter and train for sprints/olympics next year because I can go race a handful of them around where I live or do one IM a year!

For me, it is just hard to convince the body to move and get the HR up to speed after months and months of IM paced training. I know even in the TT I did last weekend I had to keep telling myself it was ok to hurt because I didnt' have to ride like that for 4-6 hours and or run afterwards.

But I will admit, it was fun being able to come in faster than most people (and a lot of them with disc wheels, shoe covers, skinsuits and other full TT garb) wearing my tri shorts, tri top and tri shoes with no socks then letting all the roadies know that I still had a 3 hr ride to do for my 'real workout' of the day!:)

There is nothing more painful in the sport of triathlon as the last
5K of a competetive Olympic run. You feel fine 5 min after crosiing the line, but for those 14min it is sheer agony!

14 minutes for the final 5k? Man, that's out of my league! No wonder it's so painful!

I'd be pretty happy for a 14 minute 2 mile time...

I hear you on that last 5k of an oly - hopefully 21 min.... Looking forward to that pain this weekend. How badly do I really want that 2:25? (I know, pathetic compared to you fast guys, but it would make me very happy) I wish I had some ironman fitness so I would feel fine 5 minutes afterwards though...

My last 10K split at an Olympic was 37:45, and it felt that way the entire time!
