Race, and dont crash your bike. You'll be fine. The percentage of people getting hurt at races is very low. The recent deaths that have been highlighted have primarily been pre-existing conditions.
Dont let people's negativity get int the way. I bet you'll do even better on the bar due to the stress relief!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Yeah, I agree with Triguy. Be a bit cautious on the bike (don't take turns at super fast speeds). But I don't know of too many people who get hurt in races. Yes, there are some, but do you plan to drive at all before the bar? Cross any streets? There are risks with everything, and you've gotta still live :)

I kind of had the same feeling that you both voiced. I had no problems doing the tri before the exam until people started questioning me and saying "oh what if you get hurt" and started to question whether or not I should do the race. I think that the best thing I can do is just not push hard during the race, and use it has a (competitive) stress reliever.
Thanks.
look at it this way the NYC Tri is once a year. You can take the bar any time and next time round you will have a head start on studying!!
dont get bitter, get better
I found athletic activity to be a great outlet during the summer I took the bar. (I even played a couple hours of ultimate the evening between day 1 and day 2 of the exam). As long as you don't think the race will distract you from whatever studying you plan to do in the days leading up to the exam, I'd go for it.
I started going back to school and training for tri's at about the same time. I have found that I do better in school and on test when I am physically active. On weeks when I'm not doing anything, I dont feel like I absorb the info quite as easily. Do the race and have a good time with it.
ps - I'm doing that race too. Is the bike section hilly?
like Triguy said---race and don't crash. FTLOG you could be hit by a bus walking across the street (not that that would be good either).

I did the race 2 years ago and will be doing it again this year, it is not hilly but there are some rolling sections, a couple climbs and some great descents, nothing to worry about. GOOD LUCK
As my friend who did the race last year, is doing it this year and will take the Bar with me. He passed out from dehydration 1/2 mile from the finish, woke up in the hospital 45 minutes later and was still home by 1pm, which would leave plenty of time to study.
Good luck to those doing NYC as well, I will be the one studying notecards in the transition area in the morning.
There was an article in Mens Health about a year or a year and a half ago that talked about the benefits of cardiovascular activity and focus. Of course I can't find the article on the web now that I'm looking for it. Basically, it said that at least 30 minutes of carido can increase your ability to focus at work or studying for a couple hours after.
Based on that, I'd so go for it and good luck!

I am registered for NYC Tri this coming Sunday and have been training all summer for it. As it happens I am also registered for the NY Bar exam on the 24/25 (only two days after NYC). A number of people have been saying that it is foolhardy to do the race so close to the bar exam because I could injure myself and then not be able to take the Bar.
Aside from the fact that I have been training for this for so long, my training time has really been the only time that I have been stress free this summer and feel like the doing the race would be a great way to take my mind off the exam a couple days before. On the other hand if I do have a mishap it could really effect my performance on the exam, and the last thing that I want to do is repeat the experience of studying for the bar exam.
I was just wondering if people have had similar dilemnas, not necessarily with a bar exam but with a big work/school related event so close to a race and concern about injuries/mishaps effecting your ability to perform on that important event. Any advice/stories would be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy your Sunday...
