Over the past couple of weeks, the temperatures here in Arizona as well as most of the country have really been on the rise. Today I went for a ride that I have done 2 other times over the past few weeks and saw the effects of temperature on perfromance. I have been keeping track of the temps and relative humidity on these days as well. All 3 rides were exactly 64.3 miles along the exact same route, leaving at the exact same time of 4:50am. Here's how they played out:

6/23- Starting temp. 77, 20% humidity. This was to be a low HR ride.
3:00:00, 21.5mph, 134 HR average

6/30- Starting temp. 78, 25% humidity. This was to be an aerobic training ride.
2:55:00, 22.1mph, 143 HR average

.So the conditions were similar and I picked up the pace by 9bpm and was .6mph faster.

7/14- Sarting temp. 89, 35% humidity. This was also an aerobic training ride.
3:00:00, 21.5 mph, 143 HR average.

It was so funny to see an almost exact 10bpm higher HR but with the same pace as the ride on 6/23 when it was 12 degrees cooler. I find it to be very similar on the run for me.

That's interesting data Bryan - to see it laid out in black and white like that.

I don't do heat well at all, and my heartrates go through the roof when it gets hot (which is why I typically do late Fall HIM races here in the Northwest when it gets cool.) I can't go long in the heat, I don't sweat much. If I ever made it to Kona, I'd have to walk the marathon with an umbrella and a personal mist device or something ;)
