What is the most scenic run you ever did?
On my honeymoon in the Cook Islands, I ran about halfway around Rarotonga, lagoon and reef on the left, lush tropical forest and the "needle" on the right, many chickens and goats jsut wandering around. Very humid. My other fav is pretty much my long runs at home, North Van to and through Stanley park on the seawall, to Kits beach. Almost all oceanside with city or mountain views depending on direction. Heard the Big SUr marathon is awesome would like to try that someday.
One of my most memorable runs was in the same place! I ran a 50k from Fort Erie to Niagara on the Lake some years ago...so beautiful.
Others...Garden of the Gods In CO Springs...(used to live there)
From Yosemite Valley to the top of Half Dome and back...(good bear story there too)
On the coast of Maine and...
Oh, heck...I could write a book.

Every run I did in New Zealand, from lush rolling hill sheep farm country to coastal jaunts to alpine like conditions in Queenstown. Spectacular.

I try to get a run in wherever I travel, my favorite probably being at the beach (any beach). I love to run along scenic roads, but I gotta tell ya, went back to my hometown a couple of weeks ago (Queens, NY) and went for an early morning run through the neighborhood. It was one of the most enjoyable runs I've had in a long time. Watching the neighborhood come to life, the business owners opening up, people heading to the subway, etc. - there was so much enengy and so much going on. Before I knew it I was running for an hour.

YOUR GRANDFATHER WAS BUZZ ALDRIN!!! Dude, that is the coolest thing I have ever seen posted on this board. I am a total NASA nut, just finished reading Gene Kranz's autobiography. Doesn't your Grandfather have a book as well? I am in AWE of all the those guys in Mercurey, Gemini, Apollo, and the Shuttle program.

Best run is along the cliffs on Point Loma in San Diego, great rolling hills and unbeleivable ocean views.

Wow, that's awesome! Total NASA nut too. Especially the early days with the Mercury and Gemini guys. Think I had a model of every early rocket up to Appollo in my room at one time!

The best run ever for me is every year during my A race. The last 7Km of the run take place in tikal (Maya City) you are running in mayan streets seeing Temples arise between the green jungle. And end up in the city´s Main Plaza.
I actually race 2 tris every year in that same location. It´s Amazing.

I've had some beautiful vacation runs, too.
The trail up to Angel's Landing in Zion National Park
To the top of a crater in Honolulu
Around Lake Mead in an Adventure Race (another shot) (sure, much of it was at more of a hiking pace, but we ran parts)
Good memories... thanks for making me think about them :)

Hey Kyillee, I assume that was Diamondhead - how long was the run up? Nice view. Almost makes you want to run right down the side int the ocean.
I have two: Regensburg and Rothemburg. Both are old walled cities in Germany and are a must if you are in the area.
I have traveled all over the world on many occasions and always bring my runners---I can't say any one place is better than others--streets of Paris, vs beaches in Belize, they are all different and all beautiful in thieir own unique way :)
Probably not on the worlds top 10 list - but if your ever in SW Virginia, there is a great "rails to trails" trail along the New River that is beautiful. Miles and miles of very flat, smooth but not paved trail, along a beautiful river that cuts through the Appalachian Mtns. Starts in Pulaski VA.

*THAT* was the name. I was blanking on it :) It was a bit under 8 miles for me of both around and up the crater. And I found my GPS version of it, and that was even named Diamondhead ;)

It's not as picturesque as many of the runs you guys have done but I really enjoy running around Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis. It's not as crowded as the other lakes and it has the most gorgeous homes in Minneapolis around it. Running around it on a sunny, calm morning is something else...
I agree with vanjames, the seawall around Stanley Park – part of the Vancouver Marathion in 1989 is right up there.
I’ve run
- around Diamondhead, through Queen Kapiolani park and along Waikiki Beach. Nice
- 10 miles along the south shore of St. Kitts, in the Leeward Islands. beautiful.
- through Monument Valley past Totem Pole in Arizona - breathtaking (see pic below)

- Melissa’s 10k trail race in Banff, Alberta - inspiring
- Alii drive is pretty nice (it wasn’t during the race, alas)
But my fav is one I get to do any day I like – along the old highway above Kalamalka Lake and down to Kekuli Bay, below is the view.

Above: Kal Lake from the old hwy 97, near Vernon, BC

ohh on that note, I have run rim to rim and THAT was awesome

Second that on Raro. Great run vistas - the needle is a fun run/hike - the ending awesome. The Te Manga Track, if you can find it and it's not raining, has the best vistas. Magic.
Big Sur would have been scenic had I not been in sheer pain starting at mile 18. I think it was beautiful.
The best brick workout was the island of Bequia. Ran barefoot on the beach and did coasteering around the southwest border. First time swimming with a camelback - I don't recommend it. That thing started smelling a couple weeks later. Fantastic run - it was a blessed trip.
Boy, do I need to go on a vacation!

I did run around Capital Hill in the rain once, that was pretty cool
Telescope Peak in Death Valley. It's just over 11,000 feet at the top. The landscape and the views were surreal.

Nice pics POC! I climbed the Totem back in the late 70's...I was running then ..but you don't run much schleping 100 pounds of camping and climbing gear around...I should plan a return visit with just running shoes!

I went to the small town of Hoxter, Germany on business and one morning I woke up, left my hotel room and kept on running. I ended up at a Medival Castle on the banks of an awesome riverby total luck. That was by far the coolest run I have ever done.
Went back to where I grew up a couple of years ago to do a marathon after not having been there for about 20 years. I ran the old neighborhood: to the grade school, jr. high and high school and to the quarry where we used go when cutting school.
Alot had changed, friends that I grew up with no longer lived in the houses that were now a different color and greatly changed from how I remembered them. Alot was still the same.
Probably not the most scenic run I've ever done, but still pretty darn memorable.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
bIG Sur is the most scenic marathon...according to Runners Word Mag. and I second that. I've run Big Sur twice and will keep coming back because is the most beautiful place to be (to run a marathon). You start in the woods close to pines trees redwood and oak tress and finish at below sea level. You run along highway 1 looking at the ocean and waves breaking in the rocks. Just beautiful. I wanted to place pics like Poc did but I don’t how.
I've had one like that too cayman... past the old house and neighborhood, past places I used to think of as a big area. It just seemed smaller... I ran out of places before miles :)

Went to South Bend with my dad for a Notre Dame game in 2001. Went for an early morning run to explore campus and ran down the main walkway as the sun was rising and hitting the Golden Dome. Not very scenic, but absolutely beautiful.

Anton, I think the more appropriate question for you is, is there anyplace you haven't yet run, that you would like to? Anyway, thanks for all the responses, glad I could stoke some good memories.

We camped in a box canyon about 2 miles from totem pole. We rode in there on horseback and the truck brought the camping gear. I ran down to totem pole and back after a day in the saddle - in soft red sand, at 5,000 feet elevation - one of the tougher runs I've ever done but dinner sure tasted good.
BBQ steak over mesquite and cold beer. MMmm, good!

Living on the East Coast, we don't get the amazing natural views and training locales that some of you get. But my favorite run is one I don't see often....if you run east from Arlington National Cemetery across the Memorial Bridge at sunrise here in Washington DC, you get to see the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Capitol against this stunningly moving backdrop of pink sky streaked with orange as the sun rises behind the Capitol.
I don't have my own picture, but here's a link to give you an idea:

I had a really spectacular run a couple of weeks ago on a trail along the McKenzie river in Oregon. Just amazing.
I like to travel though and I always take my running shoes. I've enjoyed some really gorgeous runs:

In the Yorkshire Dales at dawn in November (that's the only one I have a photo of, since my hubby took it)...
Across bridges between rock islands in Palau
On the pink coral sand beaches of Zanzibar (and plenty of other tropical beaches, but Zanzibar was my favorite)
On roads by rice fields in Japan
On towpaths in England
and lots of other cool places. And of course, the fabulous Pre's Trail here in Eugene, and many of our other lovely running trails here.

I've had some beautiful vacation runs, too.
I've got to second the Angel's Landing Trail. Zion NP is one of my favorite places in the world.
Another favorite was running in Venice early in the morning, watching the city wake up.

I just finished one of the most spectacular runs of my life. I am on vacation with my son in Niagara Falls (he is still sleeping by the way, I know you all understand this one) and I headed out at 6:00 this morning and ran 6 miles up and down the Niagara River, by the falls, the gorge, the hydroelectric plants, across little footbridges over little tributaries, up and down stairs leading to scenic lookout points, all I can say is, WOW! I saw another guy running with an IM shirt, I was wearing one of my sprint tees from a race back home in Florida. We acknowledged each other with a big thumbs up as the sun came up over the falls. What a great experience. My other memorable runs are Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami, and of course, my beautiful hometown of Ft. Lauderdale, running along A1A as the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean.
