Sacrifices for IM

In addition to the normal sacrifices (family time, vacation time, eating tasty foods etc...) what are some of the other sacrifices you've made as part of your IM goals?

For me, it just kind of sunk in over the weekend. I was on the race results web page for a few of the races (my second and third races that I ever did) last year and noticed the following:

For the second race I ever did last year, a sprint, I saw that several of the guys I just beat in an olympic by 2-4 minutes a few weeks ago finished top 10 this year and took home som AG hardware.

For another race I did last year I saw that the winning time this year was 3 minutes slower than my time last year for a sprint.

Now I know that there are many variables and that I could have flatted, fallen over in transition, sunk to the bottom of the lake and so on, but I live in a small multisport community where it's mostly the same faces at the races so I am pretty confident on about where I would have finished!

I also noticed that there are three races this fall (two bike races and one sprint tri) that I took home a 1st, 2nd and 3rd AG awards for last year that I am not able to do due to IM training.

So while my friends/training buddies are out racing and I'm on solo 6 hour rides I keep telling myself it will all be worth it at IMOO. But how I do miss the small fun races! I have one more time trial this Saturday (12 mile TT, with a 3 hour training ride later that day and a 3 hour ride/1hour run sunday!) but it is my last chance to 'race' before IMOO.

Maybe I'll be hooked by the IM bug once I do IMOO, but I can see where it may be a one and done and back to the small fun stuff.

Not really a sacrifice but $$$. With all the additional food, supps, Bike repairs, parts, etc I should be expecting a birthday card from the local shops. :)

A number of folks out there will tell you the IM is about "sacrifice." It isn't for me.
You don't have to miss your favorite races because of your training schedule...I didn't. Lots of other folks don't...of course it means I'm running a 10 mile race with 5 miles tacked on the front...or doing a sprint race in the morning and riding 5 hours in the afternoon. Like you this weekend. I use short races as speed work and short tri's as a catered workout and a chance to work on or try new things...IM is a big time commitment and I give up time with my wife...and some cash that I probably spend on something else. Other than that I don't see missing fun races to train for an IM as much of a "sacrifice." I mean, I can't use sacrifice in the same sentence really when talking about races...that's not sacrifice. Fighting a war in another country...that's sacrifice.

Honestly I just missed being able to go out for a workout that was less then an hour. Now that the IM is over I look forward to runs again...

I completely agree--I do the same. I HAVE had to juggle shopping with girlfriends or nights out for some events around training, but nothing that I would call a sacrifice. In fact--hubby is doing IMC as well so we get more time together riding and running!!! It works out well.

I agree on not being a sacrifice as way of non triathlon issues. I still juggle things as needed and miss training days if needed. Perhaps J-style said it best in that in IM training I rarely go out for a short workout anymore, and it's fun to go FAST on the short stuff.

i missed playing the other sport i love Soccer. doing that gets you minor ankle/leg problems which get exposed when IM training. It wasnt worth the injury, or wasted energy.

I also missed meeting up with friends for even one drink at a bar before calling it a night.

I wish I could juggle!
*sniff*:(

seriously though,

It's all about attitude:

- if you think it's a big sacrifice, maybe it isn't for you. Give it some serious thought.
- if it's just a small sacrifice - a few shopping trips, a weekend camping with the GF or the guys - then it's going to make the IM all the more satisfying. If you don't give up anything for it, you don't get a lot out of it.
- if you think that it is no sacrifice but rather think than doing IM is an indulgence in one of the great sensuous experiences of life, that without such challenges life just isn't very exciting, then you will get the most out of it because you will enjoy and savour every moment of the event and the training:
- those wintry rides through slush and rain,
- those long, long runs in blistering heat,
- the sleepless nights because your legs ache so much,
- the being tired all the time

because like the marines and the SEALs say, pain is your friend, it reminds you that you aren't dead yet.
