New Pro Quals
so do you think it makes it easier or harder? Looks like it's harder to me, but I'm not sure what they were before (I just have a friend in the process of figuring it out) :)

I would think that the 500+ participant rule is still part of it, no? I mean, they need to make sure the race has a sufficient field to make the results have any meaning.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!
I don't know if the 500 rule is still needed. The way I see it... having the event have to have an elite group and a purse already means that fast people will be there, and you have to be in 8% of that fast time.

They didn't have anything in there before about there being an elite purse, which is why I thought that the 500 person rule might have been taken out on purpose, like kyillee said.
The automatic qualifiers are cool.....I won't be using any of those, though :D. I think it's a bit easier than it was before, since you can still get a qualifier with a 12th place in a deep field if you go fast enough. The purse rule does take out the "race-sniping" tactic, though.

So what does being an elite do for you, aside from getting to start in the first wave?
Good point, Kiylee, I never considered that. It's still very tough to make the cut. I think I made it in one race last year, but I don't know if the field was a full 500. Now if it's only races with prize money, it still be hard. 8% isn't that much when one really fast dude shows up!

Most race directors will let you start in the first wave anyway. I want to get my card so that I can go to ITU Pan Am Cups. (World Cups, too, but you have to be pretty fasat to qualify for those....they'll let anyone with a pro card race at the Pan Am cups, though.....sometimes even if you don't have one for the smaller ones outside of the US). Draft-legal is a lot more fun....especially for those of us who get beat on the bike :D Seriously, though....draft-legal is a blast.

No kidding....Spencer Smith raced down here last month and dominated.....I think only the top 3 guys made the 8% cut. I made the cut against him a couple weeks later (barely....it was like 7.5% :D), but I think he was taking the run easy because he was so far ahead.

Off to Morton Mease for you! I do believe they havea sizable elite purse there- check it out!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Phil LaHaye emailed the participant list out today. Spencer Smith and Marc Bonnet-Eymard are going to be there....oh well....I guess it's a race for 3rd! Money goes 5 deep, though, so I might get my gas money back!

It... is... FAST. Goodluck!

In case anyone's interested, USAT changed the qualifying standards:
I knew that they were doing away with the top-8 OA rule, but I guess this means that the 500+ person rule doesn't apply anymore, either?
I also like that they didn't know that "criterion" is the singular form of "criteria" :D
