Carb loading...
I think one of the mistakes a lot of people make is that they stuff themselves with a very high carb meal the night before a race. They then race with all that still in their guts. For a HIM, it's better to eat a high carb dinner two nights before the race and then a high carb breakfast the morning before a race. Taper the amount of calories you eat throughout the day and eat a lighter meal the night before.
That being said, for that breakfast I eat pancakes with walnuts and bananas, with some protein like eggs. I also snack on a bagel as my midmorning snack. For dinner: I love Naan bread; pad thai-they're both easy on the stomach. Yum! I can't wait to race again!
Set goals...... but be here now. Enjoy the ride to the finish line.
Donna is spot on...as an endurance athlete your intake of carbs should be bit higher anyway...I do well with a bigger meal at lunch time the day before a race then light at the evening meal... best advice? Experiment and find what works for you...

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I never stuff myself the night before a race. I don't want allll that food in my belly the next morning. I guess I will do what you suggested about eating more of a high carb bigger meal two days out. Then big breakfast the day before race day.

Something I heard once at an adventure race... what you eat the day before the day before is what you race on, what you eat the night before is what you puke :) Just thought I'd share that tip for remembering ;)

I have a 1/2 IM this Sat and was wondering what kind of high carb snacks do some of you eat the days before. I eat a very healthy diet, so my meals are fine.
Do any of you snack in between meals to help the carbo loading process. I figured bagels and fig bars would be a good choice.
What's some of your secret snacks you eat before a big event?
Happy training and racing to all!
