This is the one time of the year when I can share the excitement of having a totally made up, hand picked, super elite sports team - much like our grid iron or bat-n-ball comrades do later in the year. Anyone else have one? I have one on performance's website (team: Hammer of the Gods). I think it would be fun to see how other trifuelers fair.

LongTime picked 5...so I will too although my list could go on ...
and 5 is the number of riders who score in the TTT...so that fits.

Jacques Anquetil (first to win TDF and Vuelta in one year)
Fausto Coppi ( II Campionissimo)
Charly Gaul (Angel of the Mountains)
Eddy Merckx ( "The Cannibal"..and the greatest rider of all time)
Major Taylor (If you don't know who he is...you should)

There..climbers,all-arounders ,and one hell of a sprinter.

Merckx
Cipollini
Indurain
Armstrong
Hushovd (I wanted McEwen for a sprinter, but I think Hushovd would do better in the TTT).

For this year I have:

MC EWEN Robbie (PREDICTOR - LOTTO)
MENCHOV Denis (RABOBANK)
BENNATI Daniele (LAMPRE-FONDITAL)
CANCELLARA Fabian (TEAM CSC)
PEREIRO SIO Oscar (CAISSE D'EPARGNE)
VANDEVELDE Christian (TEAM CSC)
WIGGINS Bradley (COFIDIS CREDIT PAR TELEPHONE)
DESSEL Cyril (AG2R PREVOYANCE)
GUSTOV Volodymir (TEAM CSC)

There is a salary cap on the website, so you can't have vino, levi, etc... all on the same team.

As far as a truely dream team I will have to think on that

Don't feel bad Jstyle...just google and learn!
To really understand a sport...you have to have a grasp of it's history...the devils, the angels, the good ,the bad,the ugly...
There was and is a rich history to cycling that doesn't involve Lance...who some consider a light weight.

i'm not necessarily a fan of lance, but how can folks think 7 TdF victories is lightweight? i would think he's got to be a force in the lore/history of the sport whether you like him or not

Team GFD:
VINOKOUROV Alexandre (ASTANA)
SCHLECK Frank (TEAM CSC)
KESSLER Matthias (ASTANA)
ISASI Inaki (EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI)
KLÖDEN Andréas (ASTANA)
NOVAL GONZALEZ Benjamin (DISCOVERY CHANNEL TEAM)
STEEGMANS Gert (QUICK STEP - INNERGETIC)
GARCIA ACOSTA Vicente (CAISSE D'EPARGNE)
IGLINSKIY Maxim (ASTANA)

Have to admit I don't know who a few of them are, but I had to fit them under the salary cap.

I know what you mean. You just start picking 200's till you fill it up.

I knew someone would bite!...
I don't think he's a light weight (I'm not a fan either)but for some in the cycling communty he's was good at winning ONE race...the TdF. Many others mentioned, Merckx, Coppi, Indurain, Hinault....hell, even LeMond had a history of winning Spring classics, small tours, big tours like the Vuelta or the Giro THEN going on to win the Tour... and after that winning a string of one day classics....There is alot more to procycling than the TdF.

Wait a doggone minute! We can pick anyone from any era? My list is active cyclists.

OK, prepare to get owned (Note: These aren't the 9 best ever, just the 9 best for a team.)

Merckx (the best ever... the guy raced everything)
Lance (what can I say? he and Merckx would co-lead until one proved the superior rider for that particular tour)
Indurain
LeMond
Landis
Ullrich
Basso
Hincapie
Heras

In order to play fantasy cycling, as is with any fantasy league, it can only be active cyclists who are actually riding in the TdF.

So Bhanrah, what are your rules for accruing points? Is there a website we should defer to?

Rule 1: pick a team of cyclist riding in the TDF soon - before too many stages are over
Rule 2: points will be give according to performance bike.com's scoring scheme - I will tell you where you stand
Rule 3: winner is awesome and you win a fuel belt gu bottle bike thing that I am currently using for dish soap.

Gert Steegmans, a $200 stage winner. What are the odds of that? I thought for sure that Boonen was going to pass him.

The tricky part now is keeping focused on today's stage and not the dish soap dispenser.

Steegmans was quite a suprise. I know that boonen said he gave the win to his teammate, but I wonder if he just didnt have the kick to get over the line first.

Here is my team at performance. I did not take a sprinter, so my points should start accumulating once we hit the mountain stages and time trials.

# VALVERDE Alejandro (CAISSE D'EPARGNE)
# HINCAPIE George (DISCOVERY CHANNEL TEAM)
# ZABRISKIE David (TEAM CSC)
# KLÖDEN Andréas (ASTANA)
# DESSEL Cyril (AG2R PREVOYANCE)
# DE LA FUENTE David (SAUNIER DUVAL - PRODIR)
# FOTHEN Marcus (GEROLSTEINER)
# GUSEV Vladimir (DISCOVERY CHANNEL TEAM)
# BELTRAN Manuel (LIQUIGAS)

Do you really think Hincapie has enough? I know he is doing great right now but I just don't seem him pulling the entire time. Then again I don't understand that much about the sport.

I think if it appears like Levi can't do anything in the GC they will send the Lt. (Hinc.) out for some stage wins.

I am not sure Levi is going to be able to pull it off. At least that is what I am banking on. Hincapie should be itching to get a good result because of his injury early in the season. He also will be pretty pissed that he didn't win the prologue (something he said he wanted to do).

Vladislav Ekimov and 8 other guys.

He is, or was, a great foundation stone for a TdF team,
great power, great endurance
and great fun around the clubhouse!

I'd pick the other eight but if it includes all-time greats, it just gets silly.

Picking just from this year's field isn't a dream team, just the best of the rest.

Cgroth: because you have Zabriskie - who got dead last a few days ago and for it got a basket of apples, you get 10 bonus points.

GFD - sorry your team crashed...

I have to hope Schleck has a few great days in the mountains and Vino and Kloden are fast healers.

I feel silly having Kessler on my team when he isn't participating and was just released from Astana for alleged steroid use.

It has been a lot of fun watching so far this year.

Thank goodness the mountains are coming up. 4-plus hour flat stages followed by a finishing sprint is boring me to tears.

Philistine.
;)

You sound like Al Trautwig, who it seems is constantly saying,
"There's nothing happening!" unless Lance is rushing uphill leaving everybody in his wake.
No offense meant but there's a lot going on, you just have to appreciate the details of a Grand Tour.
Like IM, it's not a sprint, it's an endurance race.
