I have pretty bad allergies and am currently taking a bunch of allergy meds and getting shots. Even with all of this I tend to get really stuffed up or runny during outdoor training, especially biking. Any suggestions on what to do about this? Right now I look like the grossest person out there blowing stuff all over the place!

I do too. I just try to get used to blowing snot rockets. An art of its own.

I must admit though, that I typically can't wait to find kleenex or something similar to blow my nose. Can't stand a runny nose.

You could go for something over the counter to dry you out, but it'll probably dry you out everywhere, so it might be better to just carry a lot of kleenex.

Yeah I also just snot rocket a lot. Be careful though... it becomes habit. One of the lobby/entrance areas at work is designed to feel like you are outside, and sometimes I catch myself about to snot rocket there... ;)

lol : P

you also have to be careful on the bike when it's windy. The wind doesn't always carry the snot where it should go, i.e., lands on you instead.

I have horrible allergies as well. Fortunately when I am running and biking it seems like everything sort of clears out. As soon as I am done the faucet opens back up.

The only good thing is I sometimes go for a run simply because it is the only way to clear my head...sort of a dual benefit!

allergies, a topic I know way too much about. I used to get the shots as a kid but they never seemed to help all that much, especially considering the pain of getting a shot every two weeks.
I eventually found this clinic called Allergy Associates and they did a bunch of tests and made this liquid that I put a drop of under my tongue 3 times a day. 3 years later I was totally off the drops and cured of my allergies. They were bad too, not just the sniffles, I would literally spend days in bed and my eyes would swell shut. Now when the pollen count is real bad and I'm outside a lot I may sneeze a bit. If you can find a clinic like this around you that does this type of treatment I can't recommend it enough. I had tried everything from pills to shots to chiropractic and everything in between and this worked like a charm when nothing else did.

Sorry for the rant, but I always look to pass this information to fellow sufferers. =)

I have been a lifelong sufferer too, and have mastered the snot rocket technique. The last 3 years I've used Nasonex which has helped me significantly. My allergies had led to sinus infections which I no longer get.

Everybody's different. This is what worked for me.

A natural remedy is to get some local honey. The bees contract the same pollen that give you your allergies. In essence it is like a vaccine or antibiotic ~ a weakened or lesser dose of the pollen.

Another thing to look into would be cutting out dairy, mainly milk. I can attest to this as cutting out milk has greatly cleared my sinuses and I have almost no mucous. Try eliminating all things dairy for at least 1 to 2 weeks and see how you feel. It's made a world of difference for me, my nose and my sinuses, so I definitely think it's worth a shot.

I have suffered allergies my entire life too. Like above, I was on shots from the age of about 6. I finally went off them and decided that suffering was better than dealing with the doctors and shots. I know that's not the best attitude, but I just got sick of trying all these things and them not really working. No medicine helps me - just makes me tired or like taking a sugar pill. Nasonex is like spraying water up my nose. The only spray that ever worked was Flonase, but when it was in my system, I couldn't sleep - it was like I was on speed or something, no matter what time of day I sprayed it up my nose. So I decided I'd rather sleep and have allergies than vice versa.

I have chronic sinusitis, and have had surgery to help with it, which lowered the # of sinus infections/year, but every time the season changes, my body can't handle it and I suffer one usually. As for what to do when biking and running - I am the queen of snot rockets. By the end of a ride in the winter, it's usually all over my jacket b/c of the wind, but it washes out.....

Sorry I have no real advice for you, though. I've just learned to live with it.

Oh and for the milk - I've been allergic to milk since I was born, so that's been cut out of my diet completely. Soy milk is my friend. I need to find out more about this liquid drop thing. Is there a website where I can learn more?

Well I didn't know it was called a snot rocket (amazing the things you learn on trifuel!), but that's what I do. Almost caught a guy in a race once who was coming up to pass me just as I was blowing. I find that a lot of what comes out of my nose is built up tears - the ones that fall behind rather than in front of the eyes. This is worsened with increasing headwind.
