Nauseous after swim

Hey guys and gals,

I've been doing triathlons for about a year now and every race that I race in I always feel extremely nauseous after the swim portion of the race. The feeling stays with me for about the first 4 or 5 miles of the bike portion. (Normally I do Olympic distance races.) I am a strong swimmer yet I find myself swallowing quite a bit of water--I'm wondering if this is causing it? Someone told me that it may have something to do with transitioning from an environment--open water swimming--that creates a feeling of disorientation and confusion to an environment--running up to the transition ares--where everything is orientated perfectly. (If that makes any sense at all) Does anyone else get this feeling and if so, is there something you do to try to prevent it?

i find the same thing particularly in choppy surf or big wave swimming. I found that is was almost like being sea sick from the wave motion and also getting water in my ears did not help. I now use ear plugs to stop the water and i use an old sailors trick of focusing on a fixed point to get my bearings. By this i mean that i pick a point on the ocean floor and don't take my eyes off it (except to sight) then when i reach it i pick another point. I'm lucky i swim in really clear water down under. If it's murky you just grin and bear it.

dont get bitter, get better

i'm told earplugs do a lot for dizziness...nausea, i don't know...might be worth a shot?

I get the same thing and have not found a cure yet. the longer I swim the sicker i become. I don't feel like i am getting a lot of water in my ears because it is covered with the swim cap but i may try the ear plugs. I do get very motion sick so i just figured it was me just being me. I don't know what to do for it. If you figure it out let me know! I would love to do a HIM or IM some day!!! Just don't think i can now because i would get sick in the water

I think it's fairly normal and common to feel dizzy or nauseous on exiting the swim. Personally it was common in the shorter races for myself, but it gradually reduced the more race I did. I think my body just adapted.

I used to get nauseous from the OWS, someone reccomended Ginger to me. I tried it and it worked, havent had a problem since. I bought it in a pill form from the drugstore, but I think any form of ginger would work. I just pop one pill about 30 minutes before the swim. Hope this helps.

Ditto on the ginger here. It works for me for any kind of nausea. Especially crysalized ginger.

I'm always dizzy after a long swim or a swim in a race. I hate it b/c I have to take a mninute or two to let it pass while everyone is running past me. I'm gonna try the ginger too.

I get nausious after the swim, but only in saltwater races. Someone recently told me that they take a couple Tums before races for the same problem. Haven't tried it yet - but its another possibility.

Usually you can combat the dizzy sensation by kicking harder the last 100+ yards or so of the swim. It helps the bloodflow.

I think a combination of the ginger, the ear plugs, and the kicking at the end should do the trick. We'll see!
